General Notes: Wife - Mary Campbell Riggs

MARY CAMPBELL RIGGS, daughter of Gideon Riggs and his second wife, Sophia Campbell Riggs, was born on January 22, 1830, at Riggs Cross Roads, Williamson County, Tennessee. She attended a girls' preparatory school in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. There is a legend that when she was not quite 16 years old she climbed from an upstairs window to elope with Wyatt Ambrose Haley. She rode behind Wyatt on horseback to Allisona, where they were married. The Williamson County, Tennessee, marriage Record 3, p. 149, shows that they were married on November 19, 1846, by Will Nunn, J. P. Although the marriage was against the wishes of her father, he nevertheless gave the young couple the occupancy of a farm with the log house which had been his original home at the Cross Roads before he built his brick house. These houses faced each other directly across the road, only about 300 feet apart. This is where all six of Mary and Wyatt's children were born. Upon her father's death, Mary inherited the house and about 155 acres of land surrounding it as a child's part of his estate.
Mary told her daughter, Margaret Sue Haley Denny, about having seen the stars fall one night in 1833 on the old rock house on the Dean Farm, where a dance was in progress. This farm, now the Blackwell place, is located on the Horton Highway (W. S. 31-A) about two miles north of Riggs Cross Roads. The old rock house has been demolished. Her niece, Frances Ogilvie Holt, speaks of how handsome Mary was in a letter quoted previously in Chapter III of this book.
Wyatt Ambrose Haley was born on October 25, 1824. According to an account given to Marjorie Haley Rainey Hutton by her great-uncle Robert Haley, he and his two brothers, Wyatt Ambrose Haley and William Haley, had come with their father from Charlottesville, Virginia, in covered wagons to settle in the vicinity of College Grove. They brought their furniture and a fine violin, which has now been inherited by Wyatt's descendant, Wyatt Lloyd Haley. Wyatt Ambrose Haley died on May 18, 1864, when not quite 40 years old, as a result of complications from measles. Thus, at the close of the Civil War Mary was left with little more than the farm, ravaged by the Yankees, on which to rear six children, the eldest being only 11 years old. Her early training, in the pattern of the old South, had equipped her to embroider, but not to do plain sewing. She had learned to manage others, but not to work herself. But manage she did, not only to rear her children, but to give them some education. Several of the younger ones attended a subscription school conducted in the basement of the nearby Church of Christ, built on land contributed by her father, Gideon Riggs. Her son, Thomas Davidson Haley, and his wife made their home with her until her death at age 70 on August 10, 1900. Both she and Wyatt Ambrose are buried in the family cemetery at Riggs Cross Roads. Their children: Gideon Wyatt Haley, b. July 22, 1822
Benjamin Robert Haley, b. May 28, 1853
Berry HALEY, B. September 22, 1855
Thomas Davidson Haley, b. February 12, 1858
Valeria Campbell Haley, b. June 17, 1860
Margaret Sue Haley, b. August 17, 1862

General Notes: Wife - Nancy Smith Hightower

A lady about my age--84 years and I are struggling to find Nelson's and Nancy S. Hightower (brother and sister) parents. Their mother is on Nancy's last guardian paper in 1808, and I quote: " Nancy S. Hightower orphan of Mrs. Mary Pewett, deceased" Nancy chose her guardian, William Hightower (her uncle) about 1802. An earlier record "Mrs. Mary Hightower gives to her children, Nelson Hightower and Nancy S. Hightower slaves, etc." about 1791. Another later quote:" Christopher Robertson gives to Mary Pewett's children slaves, but Nelson and Nancy Hightower not to have any part of it". John Hightower (Jr. son of John and Mary Bryan) m. Ann Smith (dau of Richard Smith) and in 1774 m. Mrs. Edmondson, widow of Upton Edmondson. John Jr. died c 1796. - Elizabethine Gaultney
