While in France in 1360 and 13 61 his Irish estates were seized for the defense of the kingdom by the King, who subsequentl y restored them. His first wife, whom he married before 25 Apr 1344, was Lady Margaret, youn gest dau. of ROBERT de UFFORD, Earl of Suffolk, Knt. of the Garter and his wife, Margaret NOR WICH.

In the 29th Edward III [1356], his lordshi p was in the expedition then made into France in the retinue of his father-in-law, Robert d e Ufford, Earl of Suffolk; and again, in the 33rd and 34th [1360 and 1361], in the latter o f which years, his lands in Ireland being seized for the defence of that realm, the king dire cted his precept to the justice, chancellor and treasurer there, to discharge them, in conseq uence of his lordship being then in the wars of France with divers men-at-arms and archers, a t a very considerable expense. His lordship m. 1st, Margaret, dau. and co-heir of Robert de U fford, Earl of Suffolk, by whom he had issue, Henry, his successor; Elizabeth, a nun in the c onvent of Minoresses-without, Aldgate; and Margaret, m. to Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick . BARONY OF FERRERS OF GROBY (III) 1343

WILLIAM (DE FERRERS), LORD FERRERS, son and heir, born and baptized at Newbold Verdon, co. Le icester, On 17 January 1344/5, the King, with the assent of the Council, granted him 50 a ye ar during his minority, but afterwards gave him the manors of Stoke-upon-Tern, Wootton, and H ethe, and the moiety of Ludlow, to hold, instead of the 50, 22 October 1349. The Queen grant ed him all the lands late of his father which were in her custody, 6 May 1351: he was the n a knight. The King took his homage, and he had livery of his parents' lands in England an d Ireland, 17 March 1353/4. He accompanied the Prince of Wales to Gascony in September 1355 , being in the retinue of the Earl of Suffolk, and was at the battle of Poitiers. In May 135 8 he exchanged his moiety of Ludlow with Roger de Mortemer, Earl of March, for the manor of L ong Crendon, Bucks. He was with the King in the invasion of France, October 1359 to 1360, bei ng in the retinue of the Duke of Lancaster. On 23 July 1360 he was exonerated from any levy o n his lands in Ireland for the defence of that country, as he had attended the King throughou t the last war with France, at great cost to himself. On 1 December 1360 he obtained possessi on of the manor and advowson of Lutterworth and the manor of Flecknoe, and on 6 October 136 1 he had livery of 4 1/2 knights' fees, all of which Elizabeth de Burgh, his grandmother, ha d held in dower. He was summoned to Parliament from 15 March 1353 to 6 April 1369, by writs d irected Willelmo de Ferariis. In September 1364, he sold to Robert Holywode the manors of Coo lock, co. Dublin, Duleek and Kells, co. Meath, Dundalk, Dundogan, and The Hagard, co. Uriel [ Oirghialla, i.e., Louth], and all his lands and tenements in Ireland---except the manor of Lo ughsewdy [co. Meath] with the knights' fees, advowsons, homages, services, rents, and reversi ons. He was with the Duke of Lancaster in his raid into Picardy and Caux in July 1369.

He married, 1stly, before 25 April 1344, Margaret, sister and in her issue coheir of William , EARL OF SUFFOLK, and 3rd daughter of Robert (D'UFFORD), EARL OF SUFFOLK, by Margaret, great -aunt and, in her issue, heir of Sir John DE NORWICH, of Sculthorpe, Norfolk, Bramfield and M ellis, Suffolk, &c., and daughter of Sir Walter DE NORWICH, of the same, sometime Treasurer a nd Chief Baron of the Exchequer, great-grandfather of the said John. He married, 2ndly, befor e 25 May 1368, Margaret, widow of Sir Robert D'UMFRAMVILLE, of Pallethorp, and Hessle, co. Yo rk, and Stallingborough, co. Lincoln (son and heir apparent of Gilbert, EARL OF ANGUS), who d ied v.p. and s.p., and daughter of Sir Henry DE PERCY, of Alnwick, Northumberland [LORD PERCY ], by Idoine or Imaine, daughter of Sir Robert DE CLIFFORD, Lord of Westmorland [LORD CLIFFOR D]. He died at Stebbing, in the night, 8 January 1370/1, aged 37. His widow's dower was order ed to be assigned, 20 May 1371, and, on 20 November following, she had livery of the knights ' fees and advowsons of her dower, which were assigned to her by the King. She died at Gyng ( now Buttsbury), Essex, in the night, 2 September 1375, and was bur. (presumably) in the Churc h of the Friars Preachers at Chelmsford.
