General Notes: Husband - Moses Allen, Sr.

Raymond Thomas Atwood, The Genealogy of the Gilbert Atwood Family:

"Moses ALLEN, Sr. was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He entered military service at Fauquier Court House, Virginia, in April of 1776 and served as First Sergeant under Captain John Chilton of the Third Virginia Regiment and First Lieutenant John Blackwell. Captain John Chilton fell at the Battle of Brandywine and his command was taken over by Lieutenant Blackwell. Moses ALLEN fought in the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of Germantown, the Battle of Monmouth Court House, and the Siege of Charleston, South Carolina. He was taken prisoner by the British at the Siege of Charleston, kept on board a prison ship in Charleston Harbor, and compelled to work building a fort on a small island in the harbor. This island was covered by water during high tide. Moses ALLEN and his fellow prisoners were made to work in the water. Moses ALLEN was taken prisoner in 1780, exchanged sometime in 1781, and given a furlough to go home to rest. While he was at home, he came in contact with General Muhlenburg who saw "Moses ALLEN's condition," as the General puts it, "afflicted, diseased, and worn down by his services for his country." Moses ALLEN was examined by a physician and discharged from military service on 7 March 1782.

"Moses ALLEN married Martha ATWOOD, daughter of Gilbert ATWOOD on 13 February 1783. They were married by Jacob Deefort. They left Shenandoah County, Virginia and came to Wilson County Tennessee with the rest of the Atwoods and other people from Shenandoah County. Moses ALLEN and Martha (ATWOOD) ALLEN were the parents of Mary ("Polly") ALLEN who married James ATWOOD. Moses ALLEN was a farmer. In Tennessee, he obtained a Revolutionary War pension of $120.00 per year. He died in Wilson County, Tennessee the 22nd day of August 1863. His wife and one son, Moses ALLEN Jr. preceded him in death. His children living at the time of his death were: Archibald ALLEN, Elizabeth (ALLEN) WOOD, Nancy (ALLEN) HANCOCK, and Mary(ALLEN) ATWOOD.

"His war record states that he was seventy five years old on the 2nd. day of November 1829."
Moses ALLEN, Sr. appears to have enlisted with the Third Virginia Regiment at the rank of Corporal and was promoted to First Sergeant. Both the Third and Tenth Virginia regiments were raised in Fauquier County. The Third Virginia Regiment engaged the British at Chesapeake Bay, New York City, Northern New Jersey, Trenton-Princeton, the defense of Philadelphia-Monmouth, and - in 1780 - the defense of Charleston. The Tenth Virginia Regiment, on 12 May 1779, was redesignated as the Sixth Virginia Regiment. The Sixth/Tenth Virginia Regiment engaged the British in Northern New Jersey, at the defense of Philadelphia-Monmouth, and at the defense of Charleston. Both regiments were captured at Charleston on 12 May 1780. After the release of their personnel from captivity, both of these units were disbanded on 1 January 1783.

In 1786, in Fauquier County, Moses ALLEN, Sr. was appointed constable.

The Tennessee Pension Roll for 1835 shows that Moses ALLEN, Sr., a resident of Wilson County, Tennessee, was the recipient of an annual allowance of $120.00 for having served in the Revolutionary War at the rank of Sergeant in the Virginia Line. His pension is said to have begun on 2 November 1832 when he was 80 years of age. By 1835, Moses ALLEN, Sr. is said to have received $360.00.

General Notes: Husband - Patrick Henry Allen

Patrick and Cam, as Valeria was usually called, lived in Eagleville, Rutherford County, Tennessee. After their children were born they moved to Nashville, where Mr. Allen operated a grocery business. Cam was ambitious and energetic and undertook a business venture by opening a hotel in Epperson Springs near Westmoreland, Tennessee. In that era, Epperson Springs was a fashionable summer resort, frequented by the well-to-do in middle Tennessee. Patrons of the spa arrived on the train and were met by tallyho from Cam's hotel. Because of the fabulous food and service provided by Cam for her guests, it was a popular establishment, but it was not financially profitable and she gave it up. Despite financial limitations, Cam always managed to maintain a gracious home for her children and to dress them with unusual artistry. She had a way of encouraging children to learn. Taken from the Riggs book as noted by Anne Allen Russell

Patrick was born on the corner of Broad St and Summer St, now Broadway and 5th Ave. The Ryman Auditorium is located on their old garden. Shadrick Allen purchased this property for $3.00 and at that same time purchased a slave for $500.00.

General Notes: Wife - Valeria Campbell Haley

[jcenright.FTW] VALERIA CAMPBELL HALEY, daughter of Mary Campbell Riggs and Wyatt Ambrose Haley, was born on June 17, 1860, in the home of her parents at Riggs Cross Roads, Williamson County, Tennessee. This was the large log house located directly across the pike from the brick home of her grandfather, Gideon Riggs. She attended the subscription school located in the basement of the Church of Christ at Riggs Cross Roads. She married Patrick Henry Allen on November 20, 1878, in Williamson County, Tennessee (Marriage Record Book, Vol. 9, page 180, Williamson County.) He was the son of Shadrick (or Samuel) Lawson Allen and Pearlina Patrick Allen. Shadrick Lawson Allen, a Primitive Baptist minister in Buckingham County, Virginia, moved to Lebanon in Wilson Count, Tennessee, in 1804. On July 9, 1840, he married Pearlina Patrick, born September 22, 1824. From Lebanon they moved to Nashville, where Patrick Henry Allen was born on October 8, 1841, at their home, located at what in now Fifth Avenue and Broad Street, Nashville. The Ryman Auditorium, where the Grand Ole Opry now broadcasts to millions, occupies the spot which was then the vegetable garden of the Allens.
Patrick and Cam, as Valeria was usually called, lived in Eagleville, Rutherford County, Tennessee. After their children were born they moved to Nashville, where Mr. Allen operated a grocery business. Cam was ambitious and energetic and undertook a business venture by opening a hotel in Epperson Springs near West moreland, Tennessee. In that era Epperson Springs was a fashionable summer resort, frequented by the well-to-do in Middle Tennessee. Patrons of the spa arrived on the train and were met by tallho from Cam's hotel. Because of the fabulous food and service provided by Cam for her guests, it was a popular establishment, but it was not financially profitable and she gave it up. Patrick Henry died on March 16, 1911, and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
Despite financial limitations, Cam always managed to maintain a gracious home for her children and to dress them with unusual artistry. She had a way of encouraging children to learn. The compilers of this book remember that when they were children she found time to give them affectionate attention. She taught them to crochet, made them fancy little petticoats, and invited them to festive meals on special occasions where tutti frutti was always the elegant dessert. She died on September 10, 1928, and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville. The children of this marriage were:
Florence Valeria Allen, b. march 17, 1880
Wyatt Henry Allen, b. January 14, 1882
Ethel Mai Allen, b. February 6, 1886
Mary Frances Allen, b. September 3, 1889

From Virginia, the Russells were in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia before coming to Tennessee. In Georgia, they lived on Ward's Creek, a tributary of Tugalo River just east of Toccoa in Franklin County, Georgia. Toccoa is an Indian name and the Russell's are believed to be part Cherokee Indian.
