Josiah Allen son of Robert Allen of Lunenburg, Co. VA., was born about 1732. He is listed as a tithable in 1750 and this would account for his age to be about 18 years of age.

Family records indicates he was married twice. The first wife died after the family moved to South Carolina. He then married (2) to Elizabeth DeLoach.

Josiah settled in what was or became Ninety-Six-District. He was Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. Josiah was one of three men who was captured by the Tories and carried into the swamps and put to death. [Died in the Revolutionary War during retreat of Gen. Nathaniel Greene. Lieutenant Josiah Allen was captured by the Tories along with two of his militia comrades in June, 1781. The three men were taken into the swamps and put to death on the orders of "Bloody Bill" Cunningham.]

The estate papers of Josiah Allen can be found in Probate Court Records in Abbeville, SC., and names James Allen as the oldest son. James was the next of kin and was appointed administrator of his fathers estate. This tells us that James is from the first marriage.

After the death of Josiah the widow married Aaron Etheridge. Aaron died in 1821 and left his will in Edgefield Co. SC. He names Elizabeth as his wife and widow of Josiah Allen. He also names three of the Allen children by her first marriage, namely; Nancy Mathis, Milbury Clark Allen, and Drury Allen. Elizabeth died prior to 1843

Children of Josiah Allen are:

1. James Allen born about 1753 in Lunenburg Co. VA. died in Montgomery Co. AL.
2. Josiah Allen Jr. Lunenburg Co. VA. married Jennet Etheridge.
3. Robert Allen born 1760 SC. died Montgomery Co. AL
4. Young Allen born about 1763 SC., lived and died in SC
5. Martha or Polly Allen
6. Milbury "Milly" Allen
7. Nancy Allen married Lewis Mathews and Bailey Crouch
8. Drury Allen born 1772 SC. Moved to Clarke Co. AL

Has anyone been able to locate the land grants given to Josiah Allen (son of Robert Allen, Jr. and husband of Elizabeth Deloach) in South Carolina. Here is what I have found in "Allens of the Southern States" -

Land was surveyed in South Carolina for Josiah Allen in 1762. A grant for 100 acres in Colleton County, surrounded on all sides by vacant land, was approved and recorded on March 8, 1763. (Royal Land Grants, Vol. 10, p. 457, South Carolina Archives). Another tract of 100 acres was granted to Josiah on April 7, 1772. That land was bounded on two sides by land Josiah owned, on one side by Jacob Smith and on one side by vacant land. (Colonial Plats, p. 34, South Carolina Archives).

As I understand it, the area of Edgefield and Saluda Counties was originally called Colleton County. From other things written in "Allens of the Southern States" it appears Josiah's land was actually in present day Saluda County near Richland Creek, perhaps near the Mt. Willing community. Josiah also received a land grant on Mine Creek from what I have read. If anyone has located his land I would appreciate hearing from you. You can e-mail me directly, if you like, at Etheri2351@aol.com. Thanks.

In Norma Allens book, "Allens of the Southern States", Jacob Smith is named guardian of Josiah Allen Sr.s minor children when he is hung by Tories during the Revolutionary war. Ninety-Six district, SC.
After siege of the district.
Anyway, Josiah was married twice..second to Elizabeth Deloach, who as a widow marries Aaron Etheridge. But first to?
Ms. WINN...also in the book a reason for Jacob Smith being named guardian of these Allen children is his close association with the WINN family of Va. These four children he is guardian of are:
1. James Allen, served in Capt. Wm. Butler's company of volunteers out of Edgefield Dist. sc in Rev. war. Born circa 1752 Lunenburg, moved in 1819 to Alabama. Married twice...1. ? and 2. his first cousin, once removed. Rebecca Hudson. cont.

2. Young Allen born C 1758 marries Susannah RICHARDSON..father Amos.
Susannah is younger, born about 1774.
3. Robert married Nancy Hahm (Ham)
Also moved to Montgomery co Al.
4. Josiah Jr. married Jennet ETHERIDGE. And they have a son William Winn Allen.
What all of this means?
Josiah Allen Sr. lived in the "little Saluda" district Colleton co, then Ninety-Six, then became Edgefield Dist. sc. on a 1778-79 jury list, 42 names. Need to find the list.
His land adjoined Jacob Smith's land.
