Name-Marr: Mary Elisabeth Bossle
Birth: 04 Jan 1808 Miessenbach; there is a discrepancy in birth dates between an entry in Saint James Catholic Church baptisms in Baltimore and Civil Registration from Miessenbach, Germany. The German records are written in French (Napoleonic conquest) and the date is given in Franzosischer Revolutionskalender as 3rd Vendemiare XIII. This is equivalent to a date of 25 Sep 1804. The American record (which is very interesting in itself because it is a baptismal record of an adult who as best I can determine was already an established Catholic parishioner) gives the date of birth as 4 Jan 1808. The most obvious explanation is that Maria Elisabeth Bihi, daughter of Johannes Bihi and Maria Elisabeth Schroer born 25 Sep 1804 died in childhood and that a later daughter was given the same name. The German records do not support this (but they are extremely difficult to read due to poor photocopy and obvious damage to the originals). Another explanation is that the month of Vendemiare was the first month of the calendar year for the French Revolutionary Calender. This date could have been translated to be January (which it actually is not). None-the-less this last possibility does not explain the four year discrepancy in birth years.³⁵
