This cabinet card photograph depicts
the residence of the James Pentland family in Baltimore City. The photo was
originally owned by Frances E. Holmes and was later given to Nancy L. Hamilton.
The photographer was G. O. Brown of 205 East Monument Street, "Landscape
and Livingstock photography a specialty."
This building is no longer standing.
Family legend has it that after the death of
James Pentland, it was used as a school.
The site, which is currently directly
opposite the main gate of Greenmount Cemetery
is an empty lot.

This is an 1870 lithograph showing the
location of the Pentland residence.
Greenmount Cemetery is seen on the right.
The main gate is in the lower center. Greenmount Avenue is the north-south
corridor.
The Pentland residence is shown on the corner
opposite the main gate
of the cemetery. Note the representation
of arbors to the left of the house.
There is also a small stream flowing through
the property which is a
tributary of the Jones Falls. Pentland's
Nursery extended into the
area shown here as vacant field.
Today, this same area is a typical inner
city center ... lots of
asphalt, brick rowhouses and urban decay.
