The Message Of The Family Name

by Anna Royer

Why have been spent such hours of toil To patiently finish this book, To glean a rich store from dim annals of yore, Upon the future may look?

Was it merely vain pride, bidden to work, To search for lost links of the past, To find the whole chain of an old family name, And upon it due honor to cast? Vain pride would have failed to finish this task Which tonus is shown on these pages; 'Tis a far grander aim that has sought to explain A family borne down through the ages.

'Tis a record of those lives have been just, Who a pathway of honor have trod An increase which shows that heaven bestows Its blessings on children of God.

And a message is carried through each seperate page, A message set forth from the dead, There is duty to bear ere there is merit to share, A pure life to be aimed at and led.

As you read the fair records of those of the past Whose name is now carried by you, Dare you tarnish a name you received without stain? 'Tis your duty to pass it on true.

Introduction

A memorial is something intended to preserve the memory of a person or an event. It is something designed to keep in remem- berance something else which is worthy of peculiar honor or mention. Genealogy is a record of individual or family descent. It is an enumeration of ancestors and their descendents in the natural order of succession. The preservation commemoration of the names of the lineal descendents of Sebastian Royer is the chief aim and purpose in publishing this book or register. By the aid of this register Sabastian Royer's numerous de- scendents can with certainty know not only the arrival of their worthy ancestors, but they can with equal certainty find their right- ful place in the decent, and note their relation to the collateral families of the line. Yet more. By the aid of this register many other noble and eminently deserving families related by intermarriage can trace their ancestry. Most of us naturally have the desire to know something about our progenitors--their names, the date of their arrival in this coun- try. and what country they came from. This register is the key that unlocks the door for scores of families to ascertain the very in- formation which they so much desire to obtain. And since the Bible commands us to "honor" our forefathers and revere their memories, every family represented in this book--directly or in- directly--should secure a copy of it.

ROYER FAMILY IN AMERICA

I am glad Sebastian Royer came to America, I am glad that I am a Royer by name, and I am glad that I am one of the great army of descendants who can trace their linage to old Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Again, I am proud to be associated with, and related by inter- marriage, to so large a number of noble and worthy families of other names. There are the Pfautzes, the Hertzlers, the Bollingers, the Landises, the Graybills, the Witters, the Germans, Stoners, Waybrights, Moyers, Gibbles, Frantzes, Zugs, Kreiders, Beav- ers, Groffs, Brubakers, Deppens, Millers, Erbs, Weisses, Roops, Englers, Ebys, Fricks, Hostetters, Stauffers, Conrads, Hautzes, Kerns, Gifts, Wolfs, Griebs, Balliets, Geistwites, Brumgards, Smulls, Kaufmans, Bolenders, Gramleys and other good familiies --I say, when I think of being related to all these large families, then I feel grateful and happy, and indeed honored, to be one of so large and highly esteemed a group. I suggest that this large company of interersted ones render due honor and and reverence to our venerable, departed fellow brother, Michael Zug, as a friendly recognition and appreciation of his in- tense interest and untiring zeal in gathering the material for this very excellent geneological register; and that we--one and all-- take our hats off and make a bow to our friend and brother, J. G. Francis, who, by his unwearied efforts, completed, edited and pub- lished these records, thus making them accessible to us all. God bless him now and evermore.

Preface

The following records of the Royer Family had their origin in a collection of Michael Zug,the father-in-law of the author. After Mr. Zugs's death, we were importuned by Royers to publish his records. In 1912 we undertook the task, with the thought of only editing them. A considerable number of pages printed, in which he is referred to as author, when it became apparent that the records were altogether too to give anything like satisfaction. Three years and more of the systemmatic and fairly thorough investigation were given to the task, Which resulted in the editor becoming the author. This is sufficient explanation to make clear why in places Mr. Zug is referred to as author. We have not been equal to the expense of reprinting the pages al- ready in print. The reader will encounter numerous abbreviations. All we have to say is, consult the table of abbreviations. The roman nu- merals prefixed to the names designate the generation in America from the immigrant ancestor inclusive. This is Mr. Zug's arrange- ment,as is also the plasn of cross references, both forward and backward. The letters A. A. stand for Adjusting Appendix to be found in the back part of the book, and has to do with references forward not yet in type whose page at time of printing could not be determined. The dividing of the work into volumes, books, parts, chapters and sections is our plan. Volumes have to do with descendants of the second generation; books, with those of the third; parts, with those of the fourth; chapters, with those of the fifth; and sec- tions, with those of the sixth. We have been able to include the descendants of but two of the sons of I. Sebastian Royer in this volume. It will be noticed the right hand pages are headed with the ancestors of the fourth generation. The outline of Families comes down to the sixth generations; and is really a family tree shorn of its twigs. If you find yourself lost in the woods while consulting the Outline of Families, recall the whom the desired party was married, then consult the index, which is made up of family names other than Royer. We aim to give credit for information in loco, so no acknowl- edgements are made here. Here only would we mention our printer, Mr G. Holzapfel of Cleona, Pa., from whom we have re- ceived many helpful suggestions and considerations. Permit a word in regard to the blank pages for continuing records at the end of the book. First of all, connect up with the Outline of Families by writing at the top of the first page the name of the ancestor of the sixth generation, giving his page in the Outline of Famolies and also in the body of the book. By so

doing you will have placed your foot on the first step of the stair- way leading to the top. A work of genealogy to the individual may with reverence be likened to the field in which is the pearl of great price. The field is bought not so much for its acres, though they be "acres of diamonds"' as for this one pearl. Each stone, however, may be the pearl of great price to someone. This book aims to stimulate a healthful interest in ancestry. It holds out no assurance of a vast fortune in the hazy past, which the ship will surely bring in, if you only part with a few dollors. Godliness in ancestry is the best fortune . Yet it is not enough to be children of Abraham. To be the real children of Abraham, we must do the works of Abraham; and each one of us should be able to say, "A greater than Solomon is here." We fail to honor our fathers when we fail to keep records of them. Endless genealo- gies are profitless, but our Lord's ancestory is given twice in the New Testament. We confess to errors of omission and of commission. Be charitable with us. We have done our best. THE AUTHOR. Lebanon, Pa. Sept. 24, 1926.
