Subject: DESGAGNES Family
This is my first query since joining
the ROOTS-L list. I am not an english speaking, so please excuse my errors,
and correct me gently if I am not doing things properly. I have done the
genalogy of my husband family the "Desgagnes" who lived in Quebec,
Canada. The first who came to Quebec from France was Jacques Desgagnes
who arrived from France around 1685. Part of the family of his oldest son,
Jacques, went to live in U.S.A.around 1740.
Jean-Baptiste Desgagnier married Marie
Louise Hulain in Kaskaskias, Illinois the 19-01-1745. Their children married
there too. They were:
Marguerite married Claude Lemieux in
1763, in Kaskaskias, Il..
Dorothee married Augustin Royer in 1763,
in Kaskaskias, Il..
Dorothee married Antoine Gagnier in 1777,
in Kaskaskias, Il..
Marie married Fran=E7ois Denis dit Lapierre
in 1768, in Kaskaskias, Il..
Jean-Baptiste married Elisabeth Girard
in 1785,in St-Jos.-Prairie-du-Rocher, Il..
Madeleine married Paul Rheaume in 1779,
in Kaskaskias, Il..
Madeleine married Louis Alary (Allaire)
in 1796, in Kaskaskias , Il.
Pierre married Madeleine Langlois in
1785, St-Joseph-Prairie-du-Rocher, Il..
Jacques married Elisabeth Cotineau in
1787, in Kaskaskias, Il..
Placide married Antoine Casson in 1789,
in Kaskaskias, Il. .
I would like to know how the name "Desgagnes,
Desgagnier,Degagnes" was transformed since then and where I can find
information about them.
Thank you in advance. =46rance Belzil

Hello- My name is Beth Copeland, recently
I was working on my family history and on a whim tracked my earliest known
ancestor, Sebastian Royer (Reyer) on the internet. I didn't have a clue
I'd find your page! My family would be traced through Emig, Sebastian's
eldest son, then Peter, then his son, Peter's son Peter, then Christian
the son of Peter, then Jonas the son of Cristian and so on. As far as I
can tell I'm eight generations from Sebastian. My knowledge of the family
has come from word of mouth and a Royer family history printed in 1928.
Most of my branch of the family is living in Maryland currently. The earliest
pictures we have are of Jonas and his family. None of us had any idea Sebastian's
bible still exsisted, the pictures are marvalous. Do happen to know the
name of Sebastian's first wife whom he had Emig, George, Samuel, and Henry?
Or the maiden name of his second wife Agnes? I would love to hear from
you.

thank you so much for your response.
I have seen the alternate name for Sevilla/Savilla on various census reports,
and with their accuracy rate, anything is possible. I know that she was
in New Columbus in 1881 when my ggrandfather James Royer was born but by
1900 she was in Plymouth, PA . She was also there as late as 1920 and had
what I believe to be her grandchild living with her. Many of her children
are recorded in the federal census in Plymouth in 1900, 1910 and 1920.
All of this leads me to believe that she (and William) probably died and
may be buried in Pennsylvania. Any help would be welcome. Unfortunately,
I have no concrete dates to go by in order to request an original record
of birth or death at this time.

Hi,
My Grandmother requested one of the original
copies of the Royer family book some years ago (her name, Josephine Rothermel,
is among the last records in the book) and my mother always wanted a copy,
but couldn't afford one at the time (can you believe they were only $10!).
My Grandmothers copy is being held by a hostile relative, and my mother
never got a copy (she passed away last year). Needless to say, all 6 of
us children would like to see one.
I saw a copy of the Royer book some time
ago and if my memory is correct, the disks you hold are for the same book,
of the same title.
We would love to be in line to copy the
disks. I live in Latvia, but my brother, Joel, lives in Illinois and would
receive and copy the disks for me. I would appreciate any information you
can give me on getting in line for this important (to us) document.

My name is Jonathan Royer and am originally
from Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm currently stationed in Florida, though. I was
browsing your page and was shocked to find that someone was working on
the Michael Zug book. I guess I am one of the lucky few to own a copy of
this book which has been passed down through the generations. I also have
hand-painted coats-of-arms of the family which have been kept inside the
book. I have been interested in my family history since I can remember
and intend to include a bit of it in my own forthcoming homepage, though
it is not at all as in- depth or glamorous as yours. Please write back
if you have any questions or special requests. I'd love to help out. Caution,
though. I am an Air Force Aviator and have very liitle free time on my
hands, but I am excited and intrigued by your works.

Hello,
I found your e-mail adddress in the Palatine
Pennsylvania Dutch web page. I am researching my Tuscarawas Co., Ohio Stentz
and Infield connections (with spelling variations) and have come across
an Anna Royer, born about 1812 in Somerset, PA who married (1) Joseph Infield
with two children, Mary and Johnathon. She apparently married (2) Henry
Stantz and had several other children. My Joseph Stantz from Henry's first
marriage then married Mary Infield from Anna's first marriage just to keep
things cozy.
My problem is that I can't prove who
Anna's parents were. I have found reference to a Christian b. 1787 and
Elizabeth Levingston. Other sources list this same Christian but have him
married to Catherine Stover. None of them list second marriages. The Elizabeth
Levingston records say Christian died in 1827 in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio.
The Catherine Stover records say he died in 1864 but don't say where.
The ancestors of this Christian seem
to be Christian-Johann Georg Rheyer-Sebastian Rheyer.
Do you have any information on the Christian
Royer - Elizabeth Levinston branch and how to reconcile the different death
dates? I have sibling lists from both families that seem to indicate Christian
could have married Catherine Stover after Elizabeth died.
Thanks for any information you might
have.

of the Royers in your recordings of family history? My gg grandfather was

Joseph was married to Sarah Morgan. I have been working with genealogy

Hello, I visited your Web site, and I'm
hoping you might be able to help me find information on a family that lived
in New Orleans in the mid-1860s. My information comes mostly from hand-written
documents, and I may have a name misspelled as a result. The wife was Clelic
(or Cletic) Royer of New Orleans. She married Samuel Brown Todd, formerly
of Lexington, KY. Their children were Charles Royer Todd, Ernestine Todd,
Lizzie Todd, and Samuel B. Todd. I also have reference to Annie Todd Thompson
who received Sam's Clelic's husband) Cross of Honor from the UDC in New
Orleans in 1932. Samuel Brown Todd was half brother to Mary Todd Lincoln,
and this is the reason for my interest. I am writing a book on her family
and I'm desperately trying to track down more information on Sam. I would
be ecstatic to locate any living descendants who might be willing to talk
with me. If any of this matches Royers covered in your research, I would
be very appreciative if you would let me know. The only Todd I found mentioned
in your book was James Todd on page 202. Thanks for your help.

I am speechless after reading about this
Bible. I grew up in Lititz, PA, and my grandfather is Abram P. Mease, apparently
a 6th generation grandchild, or something. I found this link while searching
the family tree maker software site. I have a lot of the family tree to
provide of the whole Mease family, if anybody cares. My parents have the
Mease family Bible, and I have photos of the 50th wedding anniversary of
Abram's grandparents back on August 9, 1909. I also have a photo of Abram's
parents' 50th wedding anniversary in the 1930's. This is fascinating research.
My parents still own the Mease family farm in PennTownship. There is a
Mease family reunion every second Sunday in September in Lititz Springs
Park. The other descendents are Benders and Burkholders. Sincerely, Marie

Hi again...Just thought I'd let you know
when I called my parents they were amazed. I am going to try to get my
Dad to find a willing cousin in the Burkholder clan to supply that side
of the family tree. I am working on the Meases, Heagys and Benders descendents.
These would now be into the 11th and 12th generations. Oh, my grandfather
Abram's sister Sadie Mease married Samuel Burkholder, I think his name
was, and they were already both Royer descendents, if you study that page
in the Royer history. Also, I was going to tell you that when I was a kid
I was always doing family trees and asking my parents about their relatives.
This is probably because there has always been a Mease family reunion in
September for 60 or more years. Now there are more Burkholders than anything.
Our family has not had any unusal genetic problems. On unusual thing is
Abram and his sisters had dark hair until they died in their 80's and 90's!
No one went bald. My father still has a huge head of hair. I am still in
shock over finding this website, as I was just surfing around, looking
up old friends, and such. I certainly appreciate the tremendous effort
that went into this site, and I would like to thank all who worked on it.
Just think of people who spend years, if not decades searching for their
ancestors, and here I just stumble upon it. I couldn't believe it when
I found my mother's family in there too. I plan to study the site some
more and see if I can find family friends who might be relations, too.
I will be sending along information as soon as I can compile it all. Thanks
again to all who worked on this tremendous website. Sincerely, Marie M.

I had an opportunity to study a little
more this evening the information you sent me. Is it possible that you
have a Fax machine which I can send you the information I have written
on my Royer line? We do match on the Christian Royer. I really have too
much written on him to type it all in this e-mail, but here is some of
my brief:
"Christian Royer, believed to be the father of Samuel is first found
in Penn. in the 1810 census of Smerset Co., Somerset Twp. This census shows
Christian with 2 males under 10 years, 1 between 26 and 45, 3 females under
10 years, and 1 between 26 and 45. At that time the total population of
Somerset Twp. was 794 males and 766 females. "Land records in Somerset
Co. show Christian acquiring land in Stony Creek Twp. on 14 June 1806.
This land was acquired from the David Levingston estate and consissted
of approximately 200 acres. On 20 Feb. 1808 Christian acquired additional
land of the Levingston estate. (RICK THIS HELPS SUBSTANTIATE THE LEVINGSTON
NAME AS CHRISTIAN'S WIFES LAST NAME. I THINK THIS IS ALSO RECORDED IN THE
ROYER FAMILY BIBLE IN MY FAMILIES POSSESSION.)
"Christian sold a portion of this
land 27 April 1813 at which time he moved his family to Tuscarawas Co.,
Oh. Land deed records at Somerset show that Christian and his wife Elizabeth
sold the remainder of thir land there 26 Oct. 1813 through a friend given
power of attorney. "Christian's 1813 migration to Tuscawarawas Co.
is substantiated in 'History of Tuscarawas Co Ohio 1884' which says Christian
entered Auburn Twp. from Somerset Co where he lived through his life. This
book also states that Christian was a Dunkard. "Christian lived in
Tuscarawas Co until his death in 1827. Although he did not leave a will,
there is a very complete account of his farm estate settling. David Yotter
and Elizabeth Royer (Christian's wife) are named as executors in this document
dated 5 July 1827." Rick, I have much more written on Christian. This
is all from personal research I did in the 1970's. Will Fax complete to
you, if you will send me your number. Now you say this may be the same
as a son of Christopher Daniel Royer. This is what I would like to substantiate.
Thanks again for your help.

I know that we in all likelyhood came somewhere from France, but have no

Rick, I commissioned photographs of the
town of Bohl-Iggelheim from European Focus Photography this summer. James
Derheim, president of the company, took the pictures and combined them
with photographs he had taken the previous year in Hassloch. Also part
of the package were three local history books (in German) and maps, etc.
from the area. The photographs are superb. Anyone who is interested in
having copies of these photographs should check European Focus Photography's
Homepage at www.eurofocus.com. You can email Jim at JDerheim@aol.com. In
making the photographs, he attempted to include only buildings and scenes
that would have been familiar to our ancestors. I'm impressed enough that
I have asked him to take more photographs on his next trip to Europe (starts
September 10).

I am just beginning to dig into the Royer
family tree and am coming to the list for help.
I have been surfing the Royer Family
in America web pages but am unable to find the link between my great great
grandparents (John Royer 1855-1904, Eleanor Keller Royer buried in Massillon,
OH at St. Mary's Cemetery)
Eleanor Keller's parents Reinhard (or
Rhinehart) 22Jul1834-27Dec1895, and Maria 1835-1931 are also buried in
Massillon, OH at St. Mary's Cemetery.
The other piece of information that I
received from my aunt Jean in Akron, OH is that both the Keller and Royer
families came over from Alsace-Lorraine, but no date was given.
Any links to these folks would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks for the help.

I have just come into possession of a
death certificate for my gg Grandmother Sarah Margaret Royer, known as
Margaret. It lists her father as Emanial "Raser" of Pennsylvania,
although I have other info that says Royer, and mother as Anna Richard
of Virginia. Sarah was born March 1853 in Indiana, married William L.(also
known as Elwood) Shaul March 25, 1871, in Hamilton Co. Indiana and died
on October 26, 1921, in Indianapolis, IN.
I am trying to connect Sarah to the Royer
line.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hello Rick, Did you receive my letter
back in July? I sent you my pedigree chart with John (Emig) Royer on it.
Thanks to you I know that Sebastian & Hans Rheyer are also on my chart.
I had asked you if you had any info on the fortune. Has it been all used
up or are there mansions/land somewhere? (No I'm not interested in trying
to get at it, I'm just interested in seeing where Hans, Sebastian or John
Emig lived. I saw the photo archives, but I don't think any of them except
Sebastian's bible have anything to do with my direct line. I would appreciate
any info you may have. Thanks

Rick, on 22 Jul 1997 you sent me several
messages as responses to my desire to locate the parentage for John Royer.....the
one that married Catherine Funk in Rockingham Co, VA in 1827. Fed census
says he was born in PA. I've determined that he is not the son of Christian
who married Margaret Kyger in Rockingham Co, VA as I first suspected.
The John Royer b. 30 Jun 1806 (I found
in the LDS date he was born 30 Nov 1806) to Samuel Royer and Maria Hernly
in Lebanon Co, PA looks like a possibility; except you indicated John died
in 1845 and I know that the John that I'm looking for died in about 1868
in Indiana. You also said you thought you had his spouse's name but packed
away for a reunion in SD. I hope you can find time to look again at the
date of death for this John and maybe find his wife's name according to
your records?
Another John Royer born in about 1806,
a son of Christian in Somerset Co, PA was suggested. Another Royer researcher,
Gene ?, from Tuscarawas Co, OH, says this Christian was his gg g-father
and his son John was judged insane and could not be the John I'm searching.
I continue to look!!

My father was John Richard Prosser (DOB
7-11, 1932), son of Clarence Earl Prosser (DOB 12-12-1890), Son of Charles
Fremont Prosser (DOB 8-12-1857). Charles Fremont Prosser was married to
Sarah Maria Royer (DOB 8-17-1855) in Dallas, Iowa on 12-31-1885. I have
a Dish Towel with the "R" Royer initial that is a family heirloom.
Text from the funeral sermon by Sarah's request I have on a document. "I
have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith;
hence forth there is laid if for me a crown of righteousness, which the
lord, the righteous, and he shall give me at that day, and not to me only,
but unto all them also that love his offering." Sarah M. Royer Prosser"
I also have papers that say Elizebeth Davidson was born the 26th of Feb.,
1796 and died Feb. 23, 1846. Isaac Royer and Elizebeth Davidson were married
January 19, 1819. Esebelah Royer was born the 14th of October, 1899. I
will try to get more information from my aunt who is in her eighties. Please
inform me if we are connected.

I am doing research on the family of
my maternal grandmother, Susan Bucher Royer (1867-1940). She is the daughter
of Jonas Royer (1836-1909). Jonas and two unmarried sisters, Harriet(1834-1923)
and Elizabeth (1843-1893), are the children of Samuel and Annie Royer.
Most of this family is buried in the plot by the Royer Church (originally
Church of the Brethren)in Royerstown, South Jackson Township, Lebanon County,
PA. The oldest grave in the cemetery is that of Maria Reyer (1787-1820),
but we have not established what the connection is. A few miles away in
Millbach in Newmanstown is the Millbach Community Cemetery. A number of
Royers are also buried here, with some grave stones in German.
We would be grateful for any information
about these folks.

in Iowa of Minnesota, I am really glad I found this site not knowing their
may be another spelling to this name. My REHER'S did come from Germany

I haven't written to you in a long time,
and in fact, I haven't spent much time on genealogy lately. I retired (completely)
at the end of September, and I still haven't adjusted to the change.I just
wanted to say that I am always amazed when I call up the page that you
posted at http://www.cet.com/~royerr/112.html.
It has my father's name, Jesse Miller. He died 13 years ago. I always wonder
what he would say if he knew that we can call up his name and those of
his brothers, sisters, and parents on the miracle of the Internet.Thank
you, and best of luck in 1998.

Rick, I stand corrected. The family records
I have do not show the marriage of Christian and Elizabeth Royer 9 July

Hi: I'm looking for information about
the parents of a Myrtle Mabel Royer (she was born on July 5, 1888). I do
not know her place of birth though I'd guess Western Illinois (Stephenson
County?). She died on Dec. 19, 1969 in Stephenson County. She married Edward
Lins on June 9, 1913. The couple had no children. Specifics on Edward W.
Lins (born Feb. 23, 1891 in Lena, Illinois, died Aug. 23, 1993 in Freeport,
Illinois). There is no mistake on Ed's dates of birth and death. He lived
to the wonderful age of 102! I don't know if Myrtle is connected to your
section of the Royer lineage. I'd expect that the probabilities are quite
high. Lena is not all that far from Mt. Morris. Just as an aside, my mother's
uncle (a Man named Aaron L. Clair was once a professor at Mt. Morris College
(circa 1900)). Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
If you need information on E.G. LINS's parents (I tend to go back one generation
for marriages) I'd be glad to provide that.

Dear Mr. Royer, I found your page while
searching for ROYERs in Virginia and Ohio.
I am seeking information on my husband's
ancestor, Elizabeth ROYER. Unfortunately, I have almost no data on her
or her family. I do know that she was born, probably circa 1820-1830, in
Virginia and that she was married to John W. Grindle of Ohio. They had
a daughter, Nancy Ellen Grindle, who was born in 1851 in Pennsylvania and
who died in Huntington County, Indiana, 24 Aug 1918. If you have any data
on this Elizabeth ROYER or if you can suggest someone who may, I would
be most grateful if you would share that information with me.With thanks
and best regards,
Amy Garrison
From Amy Garrison
Dear Rick, Many, many thanks for your
kind offer to help me track down the Elizabeth Royer who married John W.
Grindle in the early 19th century. I had found a number of Elizabeth Royers
in your Royer homepage who are likely candidates, but because I don't have
ANY birth or death or parentage or firm location information, I was unable
to determine which of the many Elizabeths was my husband's ancestor. Any
enlightenment that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I wish I could offer you some Royer
tidbit of my own, but, unfortunately, the name of Elizabeth Royer is the
ONLY piece of Royer data that I have! I could provide some information
on her descendents, but they do not, of course, carry the Royer name. With
thanks and best regards,
Amy Garrison
