First Generation  

1. Major Roy Clarke Leggitt USAF (Retired) ,¹ son of Roy Alonzo Young and Clara Clark Leggitt , was born on 6 Apr 1933 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma ¹ and was christened in 1962 in Shemya Island, Alaska. ¹ Other names for Roy are Jay Clark Smith, and¹ Samuel James (Jay) Purdy.¹

Christening Notes: Roy was baptized by the Lutheran Chaplin while stationed at Shemya Air Force Station near the western end of the Aleutian Chain.

General Notes: Early Life:

Roy was born during the Great Depression just at the beginning of the Oklahoma dust bowl His parents were not married.

(In 1994, Mae Leggitt Finney related a story whereas there had been consideration by Inez Hussey Leggitt, Roy's grandmother, of placing him up for adoption shortly after his birth. His great grandmother Elizabeth Capps Hussey put an end to that by stating there would be no adoption of any of her great grandchildren.) His grandmother, who didn't like the name Roy, called him Jay.

In January 1934 his mother and he moved in with the Samuel Purdy family in Carter, Oklahoma. Clara worked as their housekeeper and finished high school there in 1936. By 1937 the Purdy family could no longer support themselves in Oklahoma because of the severity of the dust bowl. In September 1937 they migrated to southern California.

Roy went to first through third grade as Samuel James (Jay) Purdy. After his mother's marriage in 1941 to Leonard Smith, without adoption, his name was changed to Jay Clark Smith. He went to 17 grammar schools and four high schools, graduating from Modesto High School, CA, in 1951. Roy worked as a janitor, shoe salesman, operating engineer, and carpenter until joining the United States Air Force in November, 1952. During that period he and his family lived in Nevada, central, and southern California.

Military Life:

Roy joined the United States Air Force 26 November 1952. He served as an enlisted ground radio operator and attained the rank of staff sergeant. Just prior to his marriage in 1955 Roy changed his name from Jay Clark Smith back to his legal birth name, Roy Clarke Leggitt.

Upon completion of officer candidate school he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1959. He served as a communications officer and later as a communications-electronics staff officer.

Roy attended night college courses until he was able to complete his two final semesters at the Alaska Methodist University. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences (Magna Cum Laude) in 1965. In 1969 Roy completed his Masters of Science in Information Sciences degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

During his tour with the USAF, Roy was stationed in California, Mississippi, Japan, Iwo Jima, Iowa, New Mexico, Azores, Texas, Mississippi, Shemya Island, Alaska, Mississippi, Iowa, Georgia, Belgium, and Oklahoma. Roy retired from USAF as a major on 31 August 1974.

Post Military Life:

Two days after retiring from the USAF Roy began working with NCR Corporation in San Diego as a software quality analyst and later as a programmer analyst. He worked primarily in telecommunications programming.

In 1976 he became bored with his job and obtained his real estate sales license. He worked mostly in the Poway, California area. While working there he met his future wife-to-be, Darlene.

In 1978 he went back to NCR as a senior software quality analyst and later as a consulting analyst.

After their children were grown, Roy and his wife of nearly 28 years grew apart and divorced in 1983.

In 1984 Roy changed over from the commercial side to the defense industry side of software quality engineering with the Cubic Defense Corporation in San Diego. He worked as a software quality engineer and later as a software quality engineering technical specialist. Again, his specialty was in telecommunications programming.

In 1987 Roy married his present wife Darlene.

His aim for several years was to retire when he reached 59 1/2 years of age. On schedule, Roy retired in October 1992.

Retirement Years:

Roy now pursues genealogy as his principle pastime. After his wife Darlene retired a day after her fifty-fith birthday in 1996 they spent a considerable amount of time each year touring America in their recreational vehicle from their home base in San Diego. In January 1997, after they decided they enjoyed RVing so much, they sold their house in San Diego, bought a new diesel powered 37' Holiday Rambler Endeavor LE, and became full time RVers. Darlene drives and Roy navigates. Using his laptop computer and a cellular modem, Roy still pursues his online genealogical quest.

They spend their winters on the Colorado River near Parker, Arizona. Starting in early spring and continuing through late fall they travel to a selected area of the United States. They try to visit family and friends in central Nevada and southern California twice a year. By the end of 1997 they had traveled to each of the contiguous 48 states and in early 1998 ventured down into Mexico.

They still have the traveling bug. In June 2002 they upgraded their home-on-wheels to a new, custom built 2002 41' Monaco Windsor diesel pusher with three slide out compartments. Darlene still does all the driving.

• AKA: Alternate names: ¹Roy's birth certificate shows his name as Roy Clarke Leggitt. His grandmother did not like the name Roy so he was called Jay.

When he was about nine months old he and his mother were taken in by the Samuel and Bonnie Purdy family. When he started school, he was registered as Samuel James "Jay" Purdy. He used this name in the first through third grades.

When his mother married Leonard Smith, without adoption, his name was changed to Jay Clark Smith. He completed school and joined the United States Air Force using this name.

Just prior to his marriage in 1955 he formally changed his name back to Roy Clarke Leggitt.

Roy married Della Elaine Eveland ,¹ daughter of Carlton Derald Eveland and Ethalyn Rose Montross , on 6 Oct 1955 in Nashua, Chickasaw, Iowa. The marriage ended in divorce in Feb 1983. Della was born on 6 Oct 1937 in Waterloo, Black Hawk, Iowa, ¹ died on 5 Dec 1984 in Escondido, San Diego, California ¹ at age 47, and was buried in Escondido, San Diego, California. ¹ The cause of her death was Automobile accident..¹

General Notes: Elaine's parents divorced when she was quite young and she was raised by her paternal grandparents.

She married Roy Leggitt on her eighteenth birthday before she completed high school. Roy was stationed at the local Waverly Air Force Station at the time. She spent the next eighteen years traveling around the world with Roy as he pursued his Air Force career. As was the custom for Air Force wives of that generation, Elaine did not pursue a profession of her own. She was a full time mother and performed various volunteer and club work while Roy was in the Air Force.

For several years after Roy retired Elaine worked at a local bath accessories store and later at the Miramar Naval Exchange in San Diego.

Elaine and Roy separated in September 1981 with a final dissolution of the marriage in February, 1983.

She was killed instantly when a drunk teenage driver ran a stop sign and drove in front of her at the intersection of Las Palmas Avenue and Bear Valley Parkway in Escondido, California. Because of the proximity of the accident to the Palomar Hospital, her eyes and several organs were salvaged for transplant.

   2 M    i. Derald Wayne Leggitt ¹ was born on 1 Dec 1956 in Albuquerque, Bernalillo, New Mexico. ¹

General Notes: Derald, being an Air Force brat attended schools based on his father's assignments. He attended schools in Alaska, Mississippi, Iowa, Georgia, Belgium, Oklahoma, and California.

After completing high school in 1975, Derald joined the United States Army. However, during his basic training at Fort Ord, CA, he broke his arm. His class was the last to be conducted at Fort Ord, therefore, he was offered a training discharge rather than transferring to another training facility on the east coast.

After his discharge from the Army, Derald completed a two year degree and was awarded his Associate of Arts in Photography from Palomar Junior College.

Since 1993 Derald has been the store manager for The Sound Company, a high-end, customized audio component sales organization in San Diego, California.

Derald married Kimberly Ann Keller ,¹ daughter of August Keller and Nancy Dorothy Halliday , on 24 May 2002 in Del Mar, San Diego, California. Kimberly was born on 11 Oct 1955 in Euclid, Cuyahoga, Ohio. ¹

Noted events in their marriage were:

• Formal Ceremony: Their civil ceremony was held in San Diego. However, their formal ceremony was conducted at Rocky River, OH, near Kim's parents' home, on June the 1st.

General Notes: Kimberly's dream had always been to be married on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and thanks to Derald, she got her wish!

They conducted the ceremony just at sunset overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Del Mar, California. Kimberly's parents attended but most of the guests were Derald's friends and family. A week later they renewed their vows in Cleveland, Ohio where Kimberly's family and friends attended. The ceremony was conducted just at sunset overlooking Lake Erie. Derald's parents attended the Cleveland ceremony.

Roy next married Darlene Grace Osborne ,¹ daughter of Earl Richard Osborne and Sibyl Milholland , on 26 Apr 1987 in Rancho Bernardo, San Diego, California. Darlene was born on 20 Jan 1941 in Fresno, Fresno, California. ¹

Most of Darlene's early childhood was spent in the Sacramento, California area. Her fondest and happiest memories are of her family's home on Fulton Avenue. Her dad, with the help of her mom, built their home out of adobe bricks. The front of the house had two large blue windows. There were lot's of trees, a creek full of Mallard ducks and frogs, farm animals, and of course Cinder, their coal black springer Spaniel. Cinder entertained guests by putting out a cigaret by stomping them with his front paws, finally finishing the deed by lifting his leg.

At age thirteen, her mom and dad separated. They moved to Fresno and finally to the San Diego area. For the next four years Darlene attended National City Junior High, Southwest Junior High, Chula Vista High School, Helix High School and finally, her junior and senior year at Mar Vista High School, located in Imperial Beach. Darlene joined the band and thoroughly enjoyed the band functions and the friendships she developed with the other band members, especially her best friend, Rose Davis. Unfortunately this relationship was frowned upon by many class mates. Rose was the only black person in the school.

Darlene and Bruce met in his senior year and after Bruce joined the Army, they were married and lived in El Paso, Texas. She worked as a fountain girl at Swanky Franky's and as a car hop at the Clock Drive In.. When Bruce was sent to Okinawa, she and their three-month-old son Jess, lived with his mom and brothers, in Imperial Beach. There she took over the responsibilities of he household.

When Bruce returned home, they moved to El Cajon where he attended San Diego State and she got a job at J. J. Newberry's. In 1965, they moved to the Los Angeles area where he attended and graduated from UCLA. She got a job at Kroehler Mfg. Co., working her way up from a proofreader for the typist to secretary to the plant manager.

After Bruce's company was bought out in 1973, the family, which now included their second son Jason, returned to the San Diego area where Darlene got a job at Allstate Insurance Co. as the secretary to the personnel manager.

In 1977 after they separated, Darlene and the boys moved to Poway. After trying to make a living selling real estate, she realized she needed a steady paycheck and in March of 1997, she applied for a position at International Graphics, later named Moore Data Management. She was hired as a customer service representative, dealing with problems reported by Boards of Realtors. During the next several years, she enjoyed traveling for the company, attending singles dances, dating and most of all, racing her 914-6 Porsche with the Porsche Club of America.

In April 1987, Darlene married Roy Leggitt. They had met in 1977 when they both sold real estate. They were married in their back yard with family and friends looking on. On her 55th birthday, January 1996, she retired from Moore Data Management Corporation where she had worked for the past 17 years.

In January of 1997, after buying a new Diesel Holiday Rambler RV, and selling their home in Rancho Bernardo, they set out on their new adventure, living on wheels and enjoying the United States. In 1999, they continue to enjoy the freedom their life style affords and hope to be able to continue this life style for many years to come. ¹

  Second Generation  

3. Alan Clarke Leggitt ¹ was born on 10 Oct 1959 in Biloxi, Jackson, Mississippi. ¹

General Notes: After high school, Alan worked in construction and ultimately received his contractors license. During the building recession in the early 1980s, Alan joined the United States Army as a combat engineer. He served most of his four year tour at Karlruhe, Germany.

After his discharge from the army, Alan continued his activities in the construction industry.

In 2004, Alan is working with The Sound Company in San Diego as an installer. ¹

Alan married Laura Mary Bushman ,^1,2 daughter of William Bushman and Betty , on 8 Mar 1981 in Escondido, San Diego, California. The marriage ended in divorce. Laura was born on 7 Sep 1960 in Holtville, Long Island, New York. ^1,2

General Notes: After their divorce, Laura moved back to Long Island, New York to be near her parents. Laura later married Ralph Schneider. Ralph is with the Suffolk County Highway Patrol.

On November 15, 1994, they had their first child, James William Schneider.

In 2001 they lived at 9 Harmony Street in Manorville, NY 11949 on Long Island . ^1,2

General Notes: After completion of high school in 2004, Alan joined the United States Army and has aspirations of eventually becoming a physician's assistant.

4. Roy Dean Leggitt ¹ was born on 10 Oct 1963 in Anchorage, Anchorage District, Alaska. ¹

General Notes: In 1993 Roy worked as an ornamental iron worker in Crestline, CA.

In 1996 Roy took a position as a supervisor in a privately run drug rehabilitation program in Big Bear, CA.

In 1997 the rehabilitation program was relocated from California. As a result, California offered Roy retraining as a long-haul truck driver. In January, 1998, Roy began driving for US Xpress Trucking Corporation as a cross country driver.

Because of his mobility, Roy is able to visit his children in Colorado and California on a regular basis.

On several occasions his paths cross with those of his dad who is a full-time RVer and they get a quick visit. They have met in California, Arizona, Washington, and Oregon.

Roy lives with his mate Sharon Markham in Fontana. They plan on marrying on June 12, 2004. They did so and you can see pictures of their wedding at:

Roy married Michelle Christine Hull ,¹ daughter of Ronald Wayne Hull and Caroline Susanne Jensen , in Mar 1985 in Julian, San Diego, California. The marriage ended in divorce. Michelle was born on 19 Sep 1964. ¹

General Notes: After her divorce from Roy, Michelle married David Fein. They and Michelle's and Roy's three children lived in Monument, Colorado. They later moved to downtown Colorado Springs in a house more than a hundred years old. ¹

General Notes: In April 2002 Wayne moved to CA to live with his father in Cedarpines Park.

In 2002 Wayned joined the US Army Reserve and received military training as a munitions handler. In 2004 he transferred to the US Army and is expected to be stationed in Korea in the spring of 2004. ¹

General Notes: Born at home with the assistance of a midwife. Born at 11:45 PM, just fifteen minutes too soon to share his older brother Degan's birthday of July 11th. (Roy Dean shares his older brother Alan's birthday of October 10th.) He was 21.5 inches long and weighed 9 pounds 2 ounces. ¹

Roy next married Sharon Markham , daughter of James Earl Markham and Carol Jennings , on 12 Jun 2004 in Riverside, Riverside, California. Sharon was born on 5 Mar 1983 in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, California.

General Notes: Sharon holds a management position with the United Parcel Service office in Ontario, California.

5. Sarah Alexandra Leggitt ¹ was born on 21 Jul 1983 in Holtville, Long Island, New York. ¹

Sarah is living with Rick Watts .

The child from this marriage was:

   12 F    i. Alexandra "Lexie" Shaun Watts was born on 8 Mar 2004 in Patchogue, Suffolk, New York.

General Notes: Alexandra Shaun's grandmother Laura said she looks a lot like Sarah did when she was born except for the har. New mom is doing well. She'll be in the hospital for a few days (c section) at the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Patchogue, New York.
