39th Tu'i Tonga 1810/1845, though installed only in 1827.
By the time his father had died, the Tu'i Tonga title had lost nearly all its prestige and power; he made war with Taufa'ahau but lost on Lifuka in 1826; as a result of the battle, he was mockingly installed as Tu'i Tonga in 1827 with neither poli tical nor spiritual power; he converted to Catholicism in 1848, and was baptized in 1851; he married 18 or more wives in the old Tongan ways (i.e. Moheofo, Ma'itaki, Fokonofo, Sinifu, Takaifala etc.), and had 21 children.
