'Effigy' of Isabella Taillefer

Isabella was the only daughter and heir of Aymer Taillefer, Count of Angouleme. Her maternal Great grandfather was King Louis VI of France. She became Countess of Angouleme in her own right in 1202. She had married King John I Lackland of England on 24 Aug 1200 at the age of 13, so she was already the Queen of England. She was sometimes called the 'Helen' of the Middle Ages because of her beauty.

Isabella was much younger than King John. She had a fiery character to match his. Conflict came about between King Philip II of France when Isabella and John married. She had previously been engaged to Hugh IX of Lusignan, County of La Marche. King Philip took all his French lands back from the English.

Isabella was only in her twenties when King John died in 1216. She went back to France and married Hugh X of Lusignan, County of La Marche in 1220. He was the son of the man she had been betrothed to.

In 1244 Isabella was accused of plotting against the French king. She fled to Fontevrault Abbey. She died there on 31 May 1246 and is buried at the Abbey.

After the death of Isabella, most of her children went to England where their half-brother Henry was King.
