They married about 1080 in Chartres, Breteuil, Eure, France He gained the titles of Count De Brie, Count De Chartres, Count De Blois, Count De Meaus, and Count De Champagne before 1090. Count Stephen was one of the leaders of the First Crusade. He wrote many exciting letters to Adela telling her how the crusade was going. He had made a vow to forge a way to Jerusalem. However, during the long siege of Antioch in 1098, he returned home without fullfilling his vow. Adela presuured him into going on his second crusade. Stepen and others who returned home early from the First Crusade joined the Minor Crusade of 1101. Stephen was fifty-six at this time. He was killed in the Battle of Ramia in 1102.
