NICKNAMES: Robert was known as 'The Devil' as well as 'The Magnificent'

Robert was the younger son of Richard II of Normandy and the father with his mistress Herleva of Guillaume Peuerel - William Peverel - The Conqueror. When Robert I died, Richard III was the legal heir. Robert II contested the duchy until Richard died a few years later. Robert succeeded him as Duke of Normandy. He was a very strong ruler and commanded the obedience of his vassals.

When King Robert II the Pious, King of france died in 1031, there was trouble over who would succeed him. Robert the Duke, supported Henry I against those who supported Henry's younger brother. Robert received the 'Vexin Francais' (a territory not far North of Paris) from King Henry of France to show his gratitude to Robert for his contribution to him in restoring King Henry to his throne. This was granted to him in additon to his patrimonial domains.

Robert was a patron of the Monastic Reform movement. His curiosity and devotion induced him to go on a pilgimage to the Holy Land. The journey was a long one and the climate was very hot. Fatigue and heat exhaustion overcame him and he died while returning from Jerusalem.
