Emma was twice queen of England. By her first marriage to Ethelred II 'the Unready' she was queen from 1002 to 1016. She second married Canute and was queen of England, Denmark and Norway from 1017 to 1035. She also had two sons, two step-sons, and her grandnephew, William the Conqueror who all became Kings of England.

Emma took her sons by Ethelred II, Alfred and Edward to Normandy when the Danes invaded England in 1013. After Ethelred's death she married Canute in 1017 who was now the King of England. Her sons remained in Normandy. Canut died in 1035 and Alfred and Edward returned to England in 1036. They attempted to overthrow Harold Harefoot who was Canut's illegitimate son. He had himself declared ruler of England. Alfred was captured and was blinded and then died. Edward escaped and went to Normandy. His mother soon followed him there.

Harold died in 1039 or 1040 when Harthacanut was preparing for an invasion against him. Then Harthacanut became King and he asked Edward the Confessor to return to England and in 1041 he made him a co-ruler. Then in 1042 Harthacanute died. Emma came back to Winchester, Hampshire where she died in 1052 and was buried beside Canut.
