Raymond IV is also known as Raymond of St Gilles, after the family seat. In 1088 he succeeded his brother William IV Count of Toulouse.

According to an Armenian source, Raymond was on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem when he lost one eye. He joined the First Crusade and was the senior nobleman among the five leaders. He was also the oldest and richest of the crusaders. At the end of October 1096, he left Toulouse with many others including his wife Elvira and son Bertrand, bishop Adhemar of Puy who was the papal legate. He was the only leader to not swear an oath of fealty to Byzantine Emperor Alexius I. He swore an oath of frienship instead, and also offered his suppost against Bohemund. This made him the only western crusader not to break his oath.

In the Autumn of 1098, Raymond led knights and foot soldiers who wanted to continue their march to Jerusalem. They besieged Ma'arrat al-Numan after leaving some troops in Antioch. Bishop Adhemar died had died in Antioch which left Raymond became the de facto leader of the crusade. The march was continued to Jerusalem and after some time of siege, the city was captured. Raymond was offered the crown of the new Kingdom of Jerusalem. However, he did not want to rule in the city in which Jesus had suffered so he refused the crown. He also wanted to continue on to Tripoli.

Raymond IV joined the unsuccessful crusade of 1101 which was defeated at Heraclea in Anatolia. Raymond escaped and returned to Constantinople. In 1102 he was taken prisoner by Tancred when he travelled from Constantinople to Antioch. However he was dismissed after promising not to lead anymore conquestion in the country between Antioch and Acre. Of course he did not comply and attacked and captured Tortose which should be an asset in his siege on Tripoli.

Raymond never succeeded in taking Tripoli before his death in 1105.
