Henry I of Castile ap ALFONSO VIII - Birth: 1203 in Burgos, Spain Eleanor was born in the castle at Domfront, Normandy, and was baptised by Henry of Marcy. Her godfather was Robert of Torigny 'the Chronicler'. He took a special interest in her and recorded her life. Her first name was a namesake of her mother 'Eleanor of Alienor'. Eleanor was a half-sister of Marie de Champagne and Alix of France on her mother's side. She was a younger sister of William, Count of Poitiers, Henry the Young King, Matilda of England, Richard I of England and Geoffrey II, Duke of Brittany. She was also an older sister of Joan of Sicily and John of England. Elenor was married to Alfonso VIII in 1170 when she was only 8 years old, with Gascony being offered as her dowry. This marriage arrangement was made in order to secure the Pyrennean border. Eleanor's namesake daughter, Eleanor 'Lenora' inherited her mother's political influence. Berengaria's marriage was also arranged to the King of Leon to secure the interest of peace. Eleanor reigned beside her husband, Alfonso VIII King of Castile. He specified in his will that she was to rulle alongside their son in the event that he died before her. When Alfonso died, Queen Eleanor was so overtaken with grief that she could not preside over her husband's burial. Their eldest daughter, Berengaria performed these honors. The Queen then became very ill and just 28 days later she died and was buried at Nunnery of Santa Maria de Real Huelgas in Burgos, Spain. Wikipedia.com Fraser, Antonia.
