Charles III 'The Simple' was a Carolingian Dynasty. He was King of France from 898 to 922.

Charles was prevented from succeeding to the throne as King in 884 when his half-brother Carloman died or when Charles the Fat was deposed in 887. Odo, Count of Paris succeeded Charles the Fat. However Charles did become king at the death of Odo in 898.

Some of the Barons revolted in 922 and they crowned Robert I King. He was the brother of Odo. King Robert was killed in the battle of Soissons in 923. Charles was defeated as well. The Duke of Burgundy, Rudolph, was elected King and Charles III was put in prison.

On 7 Oct 929 Charles III died in prison at Peronne, Somme, France and he was buried there at L'abbaye de St-Fursy. Eventually his son with Eadgifu was crowned King Louis IV of France.
