Tostig was the Earl of Northumbria, appointed by King Edward the Confessor
in 1055.
In 1061 Totstig went on a mission to the pope and made some requests of
him. The Pope refused to grant the requests. While leaving the Holy City,
he and his men were attacked by a local nobleman. Tostig hurried back to the Pope
and let him him know how angry he was to be attacked like that and was upset that
visitors to Rome could not be guaranteed their safety. The Pope was very disturbed
by this report and he granted the original requests of Tostig. He returned
home having completed a successful mission.
Tostig was considered a good general. With help from Hardrada, he invaded England
in the North from Norway on 20 September, 1066. King Harold Godwinsson killed
them both four days later at the Battle of Stamford Bridge.
