Ethelwulf was the oldest son of King Egbert and he succeeded his father to the throne as King of Wessex in 839. The Danes raids were increasing and Ethelwulf won a major victory at Acleah. He defeated Cyngen ap Cadell of Wales.

After his wife's death, he went on a pilgrimage to Rome in 855 taking his younger son, Alfred with him. On the return journey home in 856, Ethelwulf's eldest son, Ethelbald died.

Ethelwulf died 13 Jan 858. He was buried at Steyning and then later moved to Winchester.

The portrait above is an imaginary drawing by an unknown 18th century artist.

The gold ring in this picture is decorated with religious symbols. It is about an inch across. The inscription reads ' Ethelwulf Rex'. This ring was found in 1780 at Laverstock, Wiltshire. It probably was a gift from Ethelwulf to a loyal follower.
