Wihtred became King of Kent and ruled from 690 until his death on 23 Apr 725.

He was a son of Egbert and a brother to Eadric who was King of Kent prior.

Kent was in a period of disorder after the invasion of Caedwalla of Wessex.
King Oswine was supported by Mercia but lost power in 690.
However, the East Saxon Swafred remained.

Wihtred then became King in late 690 and ruled with Swefred until 692 and by 694
He ruled Kent alone. He made peace with The West Saxon King Ine by paying
compensation for killing Caedwalla's brother, Mul, in 687.

Wihtred was generous to the Church which was granted freedom from taxation.
He produced a law code for Kent.

Wihtred died 23 Apr 725 and left Kent to three sons: Aethelbert, Eadbert, and Alric.
