Egbert married a Frankish princess, Redburga. She could have been a sister-in-law of Emperor Charlemagne. He had two sons and a daughter.

Egbert (Ecgberht, Ecgbert) was King of Wessex from 802 until his death in 839. He became the most powerful of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. He overthrew the supremacy of Mercia.

Beorhtric rules Wessex from 796 until his death in 802. Egbert succeeded him to the throne. On the day of he became King, Elthelmund, Ear of Hwicce, led a raid on Wessex. He was defeated and killed by Weoxtan, Earl of Wiltshire who also was killed in the battle.

Egbert ravaged the territories of the West Welsh in 815 and Cornwall became subject to Wessex. He defeated Beornwulf of Mercia at Ellandun in 825 after which Kent, Surey, Sussex and Essex submitted to Wessex. He later let a successful expedition against the Welsh and in 829 Mercia regained its independence under Wiglaf. Egbert was defeated by the Danes in 836, however he won a battle against them in Hingston Down in Cornwall.

After Egbert died in 839, his son became King Ethelwulf of Wessex.
