Edwy was known as the 'All Fair'. He succeeded his uncle King Edred as King of England and reigned from 955 to 959. This short reign was marked by ongoing family conflict as well as conflict with the Thanes and the church under the leadership of Saint Dunstan and archbishop Odo.

Edwy did not attend a meeting of the nobles on his consecration day. Dunstan found him with a noblewoman, Ethelgive. Edwy refused to return with Dunstan and as a result he was dragged back by Dunstan and forced to renounce the girl as a 'strumpet'. Edwy was not very wise in his rule of England.

The Thanes of Northumbria and Mercia were very unhappy with King Edwy and they switched their allegiance from him to his brother Edgar. In 957 Edwy was defeated by his brother in a battle at Gloucester. However, they did not want to see the country end up in a civil war so the nobles reached an agreement concerning the division of the land. Edwy kept Wessex and Kent in the South and Edgar ruled the North.

In his few remaining years as King, Edwy began to rule more wisely and he made significant gifts to the church. He died at the age of about 18 years and was succeeded by his brother Edgar.
