Edmund I became king of England in 939 after his brother, Aethelstan's death. He faced several military threats shortly thereafter. King Olaf I of Dublin conquered Northumbria and invaded the Midlands. He died in 942 and then Edmund I took back the Midlands. He bacme the god-father of King Olaf of York in 943. Then in 944 He reconquered Norhumbria. In 945 Edmund conquered Strathclide but gave his rights of the territory to King Malcolm I of Scotland. They signed a 'Mutual Military Support' treaty establishing peaceful relationships with the Scots as well as having a policy of safe borders.

The revival of monasteries occurred during his reign.

Leofa murdered King Edmund I in 946 at a party in Pucklechurch. Leofa, an exiled thief was spotted in the crowd by King Edmund I. When Leofa refused to leave the king and his advisers fought Leofa and he and the King were killed.

King Edmund's brother, Edred succeeded him to the throne from 946 to 955.
