Edgar was the younger son of King Edmund I of England. He earned the nickname of 'the Peaceable'. However, he was a much stronger king than his brother, Edwy. He took Northumbria and Mercia from King Edwy in 958 at which time he was declared King of the Thames by Mercian nobles. He officially succeeded Edwy in October 959 when King Edwy died.

King Edgar's reign was peaceful and although other kings were credited with founding England, Edgar consolidated it. By the end of his reign there was little chance of it receding back into its constituent parts.

Edgar was not crowned as King of England until 973. The service devised by Dunstan celebrated a poem in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and is the basis of the present-day coronation ceremony of the British. After the ceremony for King Edgar, other kings came and gave their allegiance to him. Shortly after six kings in Britain pledged they would be the king's henchmen on sea and land.

King Edgar died in 975 and was buried at Glastonbury Abbey.
