Richard de Redvers was a major supporter of Henry I while he fought Robert Curthose, his brother, over the English throne. In return for his help, Henry, in 1100, gave him the towns of Tiverton, Honiton and the honour of Plympton, as well as a yearly pension of one-third of the revenue of that county. Then in 1102 he gave him the Lordship of the Isle of Wight which remained with his descendants through the De Redvers and De Vernons until the reign of King Edward I.

In the "Cartulary of Carisbrooke", Richard is called the nephew of William Fitzosbern, 1st Earl of Hereford. It seems this would tend to be supported with the grant of the Isle of Wight to him when Roger de Breteuil died.

According to some sources, Richard's wife was Lady Adeliza who was a daughter of William Peverel of Nottingham and his wife Adelina of Lancaster.
