In the "Cartulary of Carisbrooke", Richard is called the nephew of William Fitzosbern, 1st Earl of Hereford. It seems this would tend to be supported with the grant of the Isle of Wight to him when Roger de Breteuil died. According to some sources, Richard's wife was Lady Adeliza who was a daughter of William Peverel of Nottingham and his wife Adelina of Lancaster.
