Matilda was of very small stature. She was a descendant of King Alfred 'The Great'.
Guillaume (William) Peuerel, Le Conquerant and Matilda defied a papal band and were married in 1053.

After the 1066 Conquest of England, William became King of England and Matilda was
crowned Queen at Winchester. She acted as regent in Normandy during the times that
William was away in England. She went with William to Selby in Northern England
where she gave birth to Henry I who would become King in the future.
She went back to the Duchy of Normandy in 1069 where she remained in charge.

Matilda became ill in 1083 and William came to be with her in Caen.
She died on 2 Nov. 1083 and is buried in Caen, Normandy, France.
