He was the Margrave of Irvea and King of Italy.
When King Lothar II of Italy died in 950, Berengar took advantage
of the opportunity and declared himself and his son Adalbert II as
Joint Kings of Italy. He tried to force Adelaide
(widow of that last three kings of Italy) to marry his son in order to legitimize
his rule. However, Otto I invaded in 951 and forced Berengar
to pay homage to the emperor and he, being a widower,
married Adelaide himself.
Berengar II continued as vassal of the empire. He intrigued with
Pope John XII against Otto and ravaged Italy in 963 but was deposed,
captured, and imprisoned. Italy fell under the direct
control of the Holy Roman Empire.
