Devonshire, England

Totnes Castle is a Norman motte and bailey castle in England. The Castle is located in Totnes which is on the River Dart in Devon. It sits on top of a large hill above the town. There are three valleys which approach the castle which guards them.
The first castle at this site could have been built by Juhel 'Judhael', a lieutenant of the Conqueror. It was given to him in 1068. After Juhel died Totnes was granted to Roger de Nonant and it stayed in his family for the next three generations. William de Braose then had possession of the castle and he constructed the first stone fortifications.
The De La Zouch family controlled the castle by 1326 which had fallen into ruin. There was a royal order made for the repair of it. At that time a stable was constructed and a constable was appointed. After the Wars of the Roses the castle fell into disrepair again.
The 'English Heritage' has controlled the castle since 1984.
