PORTCHESTER CASTLE Portsmouth Harbour, Hampshire, England
Outer Courtyard of Portchester castle taken from the roof of the tower on 13 July 2004.
Portchester Castle is considered one of the finest Roman Channel fortifications left in Europe. It was built in the 3rd century to protect the southern coastline of Britain from the Saxon raiders. It is located at the head of Portsmouth harbour. It was built of flint bonded with limestone slabs.
The castle had been in continual use from the time of the Roman armies until the 19th Century when it was used as a gaol for prisoners of the Napoleonic Wars. This is probably the reason the the walls are in such good shape.
Inside the grounds, close to the south east corner is a small church.
