Picture taken by Martin Tod on September 2, 2004.
Donnington Castle was built by Richard Abberbury the Elder who was the original owner. Richard II granted the license to him in 1386.
King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I visited Donnington Castle and the Queen wanted to live there during her imprisonment by her sister, Queen Mary I. She was not allowed to do so.
Several battles occured including the English Civil War, Battle of Newbury, and the Second Battle of Newbury.
The Parliament voted to demolish the castle in 1646 and consequently today there is only the four towered gatehouse and sourrounding earthworks that remain.
