CAMBRIDGE 'GRONTEBRUGAE' CASTLE

Cambridgeshire, England

Cambridge 'Grontebrugae' Castle was a Norman motte and bailey fortress. William Peuerel - the Conqueror built a castle on Castle Hill with a motte and bailey two years after his conquest of England. Cambridge came under the control of the King and his deputies. The castle was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century. A gate house, curtain walls and a keep were built in the 13th century. During the 19th century Cambridge castle became a court and prison. Construction workers have since removed the large twin towered gatehouse and the tower on the motte. The stones from these were used to build colleges.
