ABBOTSBURY CASTLE

Abbotsbury, Dorset, England

Abbotsbury Castle is located in south west Dorset. It is an iron age hill fort on Wears Hill (Chalk hill) above the village of Abbotsbury. It is seven miles west of Dorchester and overlooks the English Channel.

This fort was occupied by the Celtic Durotriges tribe and because of its placement was the front line of defence from invasion. In 43 A.D. the Roman invaded and the second Augustian legion of Vespasian took the fort quickly. There was little struggle before they moved on to Maiden Castle.

The Romans settled in some hill forts but there is no evidence that they settled at Abbotsbury Castle.
