"Alter, Betsey Amanda relict of the late Dr. David Alter, died at her home on Water Street, Thursday AM, November 15, 1900, in her 76th year, She was born Thursday, May 26, 1825, was a daughter of the late Daniel Rowley, and was married to Dr. Alter in 1855. One daughter, Mrs. Anna Burtner, survives her. On her mother's side she was descended from the celebrated Hale family of England. Her grandmother was a daughter of the younger of the eminent jurist, Sir Matthew Hale. She has been almost a life long resident of this place, and was a faithful member of the Methodist Church. The friends have our sympathy in their loss. The funeral of Mrs. Alter will take place from the M.E. Church tomorrow afternoon at 1:30."

"Died: Alter / At Freeport, PA, on Saturday, May 26, Mr. David Alter, son of Dr. David Alter, in the 43rd year of his age. The subject of the above notice was of the many whom we all honor, who in the hour of need, went forth to battle with his country's foes. He was a member of Company F, 78th Regiment, and served 3 years with honor. In the Battle of Stone River he was severely wounded in the chest, the ball penetrating the lung, and remaining there; subsequently causing an irritation which ultimately resulted in consumption, of which he died. The funeral services were held on Monday, at the residence of his father, and were largely attended."

"Dust to Dust / Saturday morning, March 18, at her residence on Franklin street, Mrs. Lydia Atkinson, aged 72 years. Mrs. Atkinson, or "Aunt Lydia" as she was generally called, was well-known in the community, having lived on what is known as the "Stoney Hollow Farm" for a great many years. A few years since, after her children had all been married and removed to homes of their own, she came to town and has lived here since, where she died on Franklin street. She was a most estimable woman and always enjoyed the confidence and respect of her neighbors and friends. We sympathize with her family and friends in the loss of their mother."

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. / Surviving besides her brother are nieces and nephews. / Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hartwell Funeral Home, Tully. "Shirley I. Beth, 67, a resident of Truth or Consequences more than 14 years, died Oct. 28, 2002, at the Sierra Health Care Center. She was born Aug. 11, 1935, in Fulton, KS, to Floyd Earl and Dora E. (Cosens) Beth. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse most of her life and recently retired from the New Mexico Veterans Home. She enjoyed her spare time researching and studying her familys genealogy. She also enjoyed gardening and working on her home computer. Survivors include her sister, Marlene Beth of T or C; her brother, Carl Edward Beth and wife Trudy of Lake Havasu, AZ; three nieces, Debbie Marlene Adams of Mount Joy, PA, Connie Kathryn Crofts of Elmo, TX, and Cindie Lynn Diaz of Chandler, AZ.
Graveside services were held at the family plot at the Fairview Cemetery in Fulton, KS. Local arrangements were by Sierra Funeral Home and Sierra Crematory, 507 W. McAdoo St. in T or C."

Jean R. (Rowley) Buechner, 92, of Freeport, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born June 2, 1915, in Freeport, daughter of the late William Wesley and Carrie L. (Rowley) Rowley. Mrs. Buechner resided in Freeport Borough all of her life. She graduated from Freeport High School in 1933. She then attended and graduated from Elliott Business School, Wheeling, W.Va. Mrs. Buechner trained as a secretary and worked for the American Red Cross during the flood of 1936. She was a volunteer for the Freeport Area Meals-on-Wheels. Jean was a member of Freeport United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, George D. (Carol) Buechner Jr., of West Union, W.Va., and Daniel E. (Joanne) Buechner, of Brandon, Fla.; her daughter, Amanda J. (Michael) Allen, of Norfolk, Va.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Elizabeth "Betty" McKnight, of Freeport. In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, George D. Buechner, on Oct. 16, 1982. They were married Jan. 9, 1937. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the DENNIS J. DAUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 324 Fourth St., Freeport, where funeral ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with her pastor, the Rev. Edd Myers, officiating. Burtner, Anna Rosette (Alter) 1864-1929

"Dust to Dust / Mrs. Anna Burtner died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clyde Scott, Vandergrift, Sabbath, Aug. 4, 1929 of heart trouble. Mrs. Burtner was a daughter of the late David Alter, a noted scientist, the dedication for whose memorial in the Freeport Cemetery a few years ago was one of the largest and most impressive ceremonies of the kind ever held in Freeport. Mr. Alter, according to good authority, discovered or invented the telegraph about the same time as Professor Morse, but never attempted to capitalize his discovery. The late Professor John Brashear, celebrated scientist of Pittsburgh, who made the principal address at the above mentioned dedication, told of the discovery of what is known as the spectrum analysis by Dr. Alter, which is considered on the most important for years at that time. Mrs. Burtner lived for a number of years on Water Street, and was for a long time official reporter of the river stage for the U.S. government. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. Clyde Scott, of Vandergrift, with whom she made her home. The funeral services were held here Tuesday afternoon in the M.E. Church."

David N. Burtner, 77, of Stow, Ohio, formerly of Harrison, died Sunday (Aug. 22, 2004) in Hospice Care Center, Copley, Ohio.
Born Oct. 26, 1926, in Harrison, he lived 45 years in Ohio.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Mr. Burtner was a material handler in the stamping plant at Ford Walton Hills.
He was a member of the Moose in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, the Eagles and Acker-Moore Memorial Post, both of Stow.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Reichard-Coda Burtner; a son, David M. (Rhonda) Burtner of Morgan City, La.; a daughter, Debbie (Bruce) Reger of Springdale Township, Ohio; two stepsons, John (Georgia) Coda of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Lee Coda of Stow; two stepdaughters, Rhonda Gaebelein of Stow and Darlene Coda of Green, Ohio; and a sister, Irene (Robert) Ormesher of Leechburg.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Kelly (David) Pongracz, Gaylon and Heath (Jessica) Jones, Hannah and Taylor Burtner, Joshua Reger and Connor Nipper; four great-grandchildren, Katilyn and Christopher Pongracz, and Breanna and Brock Jones; and two sisters-in-law, Florence Burtner and Avanall Elliott.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Valjean Elliott Burtner, in 1974; his parents, David N. and Nellie Shook Burtner; and a brother, Roy Burtner.
Visitation was in Stow. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Mount Airy Chapel, Harrison. Burial will be in Mount Airy Cemetery, Harrison. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron, OH 44333."

He was a quiet, upright citizen who never made much stir in the world but minded his own business and spoke no ill of his neighbor. He leaves a wife but no children."

Mrs. Burtner was born Saturday, Feb. 22, 1913, in Natrona, a daughter of the late Peter and Hilma Swanson Johnson. She was a 1932 graduate of Har-Brack High School. She worked as a ward clerk for 24 years at Alle-Kiski Medical Center, Natrona Heights. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Natrona Heights. She loved dogs and, because of that love, she boarded dogs for people. She also enjoyed traveling and reading. She is survived by her daughter, Betty L. (William) Rebhum, of Buffalo Township; two sisters, Wilma Heutchy, of Sarver, and Sally Bargerstock, of Tennessee; three grandchildren, Rae Ann (Alvin) Cline, of Welch, W.Va., Jennifer (Michael) Kearns, of Sigel, and Karen Maldonado, of Niceville, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Desiree' and Cameron Cline and Daniel Maldonado; and one great-great-grandchild, Audrianna Nowlin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond O. Burtner, who died Sept. 26, 1962; brother, Harvey Johnson; and two sisters, Gertrude Johnson and Dorothy Gibson. She was born May 1, 1911, in Freeport, daughter of the late Clyde and Liverne (Burtner) Scott. Anna lived in Vandergrift most of her life before moving to Reston. She was a homemaker and had also worked as a licensed practical nurse for five years at Pittsburgh Hospital, retiring in 1976. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Thomas Cannon; daughter, Elizabeth Stover; two sisters, Olga Gagen and Helen Goodbread; and brother, Robert Scott. Anna is survived by her children, David (Alexandra) Cannon, of Reston, Martin (Katherine) Cannon, of Federal Way, Wash., Douglas (Beverly) Cannon, of Concerd Township, Ohio, Kathleen (Fred) Mathis, of Holland, Mich., and Charles D. "What the Autopsy Revealed: Mrs. Eugene Clark's Death Due to Blow Struck By Husband with a Hammer.

"The autopsy conducted by Dr. E. S. Drury of Natural Bridge, and Dr. D.J. Culver of Harrisville under the direction of coroner H .A. Pawling, revealed the fact that the death of Mrs. Eugene Clark of Harrisville, was due to injuries. The autopsy revealed the fact that Mrs. Clark had been struck about in the center of the top of the head, breaking out 2 pieces of bone half an inch in width and aggregating 1 x/x (?) inches in length... Mrs. Clark is survived by her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Nelsen Mantel, one daughter Mrs. Charles Blanchard, and a brother, Charles Mantle, all of Harrisville; also a step-daughter, Mrs. Starkweather, of Star Lake."

Marlene A. Dean, 58, of San Diego died Jan. 17. She was born in White Plains, N.Y., and was an environmental geologist for Anteon Corp. Survivors include her companion, Jon Losee; daughters, Christine Dean, Danielle Allison and Kathleen Fisher; sister, Carol Purciel; and brother, Gerald Rowley.

He was born April 4, 1908, in Florenza, to Edward and Ida (Piper) Gagen. He retired in 1984 as vice president of Peoples Realty where he worked for 35 years. He was a member of St. Camillus Church, New Castle, a real estate broker and appraiser, and a member of the board of directors of Junior Achievement. Surviving are his wife, Olga (Scott) Gagen, whom he married Aug. 10, 1936; four sisters, Mrs. Norman (Mary) Fossler, of Vandergrift, Mrs. Anne Knorr, Mrs. Peter (Geraldine) Carrier, and Mrs. Charles (Ida) Westwood, all of Kittanning; and one brother, Francis Gagen, of Butler. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mrs. Earl (Eileen) Weis; and four brothers, Leonard, James, Patrick and Richard Gagen. Gagen - Friends of Charles L. "John J. "Bud" Hale, 71, of 134 Washington Street, Freeport, died Friday, Sept. 2, 1988, at his home. He was born July 10, 1917, in Freeport to the late Charles A. Hale Sr. and Margaret (Campbell) Hale. He served as treasurer of the Freeport Borough since 1957. He formerly served on Freeport Council and was a former member of Freeport school board. Mr. Hale retired in 1982 as traffic manager of Schenley Industries, where he had worked since he was 17. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Signal Corps in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Hale was a member of the Freeport United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6648 of Freeport and the National Rifle Association. He was a past master of Armstrong Lodge 239 F & AM of Freeport and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed gardening. Surviving are his wife, Ruth (Rowley Hale, whom he married Dec. 16, 1939; Two sons, John Robert of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Jeffrey J. of Corning, N.Y.; one daughter, Mrs. Lee (Bonnie) Risch of Saxonburg; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, C.A. Hale Jr., and an infant son, Gordon. Hale-friends of John J.
