Webb is shown on a chart given to me by my cousin, Robert Rowe, as the father
of William Webb. He states that the information was given to him by another

I. Webb(13)
(8) was born on 27 Aug 1780 in VA. He died on 16 Nov 1853 in McLean
Co., KY. He was buried in Webb-Karnes Family Cemetery, McLean Co., KY..
Richard I. Webb was born in a neighborhood fort in SW Virginia while it was being
unsuccessfully besieged by Indians under British officers. He came to Muhlenberg
Co., KY. before 1800 and there met and married Tabitha Elizabeth Gainey. The
land he acquired remained in the hands of his descendants until it was sold Nov.
27, 1914 by R. P. Rowe and Lillian M. (Karnes) Rowe to Morgan Yeiser. The land
is located near the community of Buttonsberry about one mile west of the small
town of Island and was in Muhlenberg Co., KY. Since 1854, this farm has been
in McLean County. Both he and his wife died on their farm and are buried in the
Webb-Karnes Family Cemetary. Their tombstones were inscribed " R. I. Webb"
and "T. E. Webb", but have since been carried away by vandals.

Note: The following biography is copied from a book of biographies and related
genealogical documents compiled by my father, Ernest Perry Rowe, (1890-1981)
entitled Genealogy of Ernest P. Rowe, Jr. In the Forward of that book he states
that, "This record is being typed in 1958." -- Ernest P. Rowe, Jr.,

Elizabeth "Betsy" Webb (she did not use her first name), daughter of
Richard I. and Elizabeth (Gainey) Webb, was born June 29, 1806 in her parent's
home near Island Station in Muhlenberg Co., KY. Her education must have been
given to her mainly by her parents, since there were no public schools in the
community, but there may have been some private subscription schools. When she
was quite young she married James Alexander Girvin and to them were born the
two listed children. After her husband died she married Simeon Bates. Her father,
Richard I. Webb, did not much approve of this wedding but she ignored his objection
and probably her second marriage was successful. By that marriage she had one
son, Richard I. Bates. The Bates family lived on their large farm on the old
original Hartford and Madisonville road at a point where it crossed Cypress Creek
and was only about three miles west of her native home which she sold to her
daughter and son-in-law, Reuben Mason Karnes.
The following is a verbatim copy of a most interesting letter, written by Elizabeth
Bates, nee Webb, evidently at two sittings on October 6th and 19th, 1862 to her
son, John James Alexander Girvin. She was probably a widow at this time as I
believe she outlived both her husbands.
"At 2 o'clock in the Evening.
"October the 5, 1862. McLeane County, Ky. Sabbath.
My Dear Son John James Alexander Girvin. Your mother according to request made
by you, years ago, has at last makes the attempt to give you a short account
of your ancestry.
"First your grandfather, on your father's side came from Ireland, the city
of Dublin, before the Revolutionary War, at the age of 16. He was a truthful
energetic Irishman, lived to the age of 86. He departed this life in the year
1848. Your Grandmother, his wife, was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Irvin a native
of Ireland. Elizabeth Irvin was, her maiden name. She departed this life, I
think in her 76th. year in greate peace with God. They were both members of
the old Presbyterian Church.
"Your Grandfather R. I, Webb, was the son of the Sillibrated Will Webb,
from England -- your Grandfather Richard Webb, was a Virginian. He departed this
live in the 75th year of his age. He was born the year 80 in a Fort, from the
British and Indians. His mother was an English lady, the daughter of Mr. Joseph
Ony from England. She departed this live in the year 1816 -- She was a devoted
Christian went off happy in the faith of reaping a greate reward. Your own grandmother
Webb was the daughter of Matthew Gainey. Tabitha was her given name. She was
a native of North Carolina. She was born February 13, 1785. Departed this life
August the 6th. 1855 aged 70 years and six months. She lived as a member of
the Methodist Episcopal Church 55 years.
"Your own father was a Kentuckian, James Alexander Girvin (son of the genuine
John and Elizabeth Girvin. He was born January 12th, 187, [Note: Evidently
she meant 1807 as that date agrees with all other information we have]. He departed
this life October 14th, 1830, aged 24 years and none months and two days. He
was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church from his seventeenth year. He
departed this life, exhorting all his friends and nabors to meet him in heaven.
31 years ago. Oh, how many years have I yet to linger on in this unfeeling
and sin polluted world, tho I do intend by the help of God to try to meet my
Best and loviest companion in that land. Oh, what a raptious thought, if I can
only know your father in that Blessed Abode, after him being gone so long from
me. Oh, he has been gone so long tho it is so long, I am yet trying to make
my Route shure. I am now 56 years old and I may stay 20 or 30 years yet.
"This is the 19th, of October, 1862. 0 my son, Will you seek to meet your
departed father you never saw him, tho if you get to heaven, you will see him
and know him, tho it may be ever so many years. He will appear in all the vigor
of youth. 0 when I think how he is at this time enjoying the company of them
sweet little grandsons of mine and sweet little Eliza. O how I want to be there.
Oh, heven. O Eternity, there forever no sorrow, no sickness can enter that
blissful place and then to think that Jesus the King of the Heavens and the Earth
is feeding them and leading them to living fountains of Water. Christ loved little
children on earth and he was always going about doing good. My little boy is
there, Nathan and Milton, Johnny and little Ruby and (illegible). What a pretty
company they are, safe from war and pestilence and famine and a thousand other
sorrows. Roll on O time and bring us all to shore. Time like an everrolling
stream bares all her sons away - fly winged time, I save can say nor let me heare
forever stay - This world is not my home. This earth a howling wilderness, a
wilderness of Woe."

When Elizabeth wrote the last section of the above letter undoubtedly she was
in a deeply emotional frame of mind. She could not foresee that so many of her
relatives and descendants would read and treasure this missive, nor that ninety-six
years later one of her descendants would be typing a verbatim copy of it on a
kind of machine that was not even in existence in her day. She is buried in
the family cemetery near the site of the house in which she was born. I do not
have before me the information about the date of her death although I have seen
the tablet that was erected over her grave. Whether the dates on it are still
legible I do not know. The original letter now is in the hands of Mrs. Helen
(Girvin) Rouse at Owensboro, Kentucky.
Married first to James Alexander Girvin, second to Simeon Bates and, third to
John M. Bishop. She outlived all three husbands and is buried beside her first
husband in the Webb-Karnes Cemetary on the farm where she was born and raised.
She had two children by her first marriage, one by the second and none by the
third. She was apparently known by the name Elizabeth and was called by the
nickname, "Betsy". The supplemental DAR application of Mrs. T. C. (Helen
Elizabeth Girvin) Rouse lists her name as "Elizabeth (Betsy) Webb."

William
Webb(67) was born on 2 Jan 1739 in
Oxford, England. He emigrated about 1760 from England. He died on 19 Mar 1818
in Russell Co., VA, USA.
William Webb was born, educated and lived in Oxford, England until the time he
was employed, about 1760, by Lord Fairfax who brought him to America where he
was employed for many years in Lord Fairfax's land office in the northern neck
of Virginia. During this time George Washington also used this office while
surveying on the six million acre Fairfax estate. Washington was seven years
older than Webb but both were comparatively young men, well educated, and each
working for the same employer.
William Webb's only marriage was to a daughter of Benjamin Oney. They had ten
children as documented in this record.
After coming to America, William Webb spent the rest of his life in Virginia.
During the American Revolution his home was in Botetourt County. Records there
show he owned considerable land and livestock, served on grand juries, and was
a soldier in the Catawba Company of the Botetourt County, Virginia, Militia under
the command of Captain Robinson.
After the war was over he moved to Abingdon in Washington County where he was
employed by County Clerk John Campbell as a deputy clerk, recording deeds, wills,
court orders and other clerical work. During a short term each year he also
taught school in a building Mr. Campbell had caused to be built for the Abingdon
community.
Wherever he lived he usually taught school for a short period each year; also
he usually was the local "scrivener," writing deeds, contracts, wills,
etc., in communities where lawyers usually were not available. To read some
of the documents he prepared would lead one to believe he had at some time studied
law. A splendid example of his work is in the Will of his father-in-law, Benjamin
Oney, which is dated January 11, 1790 and is recorded in Will Book 1, page 5,
in the Tazewell County, Virginia Circuit Clerk's office.
In 1786 he moved to Russell County, Virginia, where he taught school and farmed
the remainder of his life. He died in that county March 19, 1818, aged 79 years,
2 months, and 17 days.
