bullet Richard Perry Rowe(8) (63)(13) (54) (photo) was born on 16 Mar 1854 in Ohio Co., KY. He died on 14 Jan 1938 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY. He was buried in Macedonia Bapt. Church, Daviess Co., KY.

The following biography was written by my father, Ernest Perry Rowe, the eldest son of Richard Perry Rowe, and sent to me in April, 1973. - E. P. Rowe, Jr. , 6/6/94

"School teacher, county school commissioner, Postmaster, merchant, hotel operator, timberman, licensed steamboat pilot, farmer and lawyer, Richard Perry Rowe was born March 16, 1854 on a farm in Ohio County, Kentucky. He married Lillian May Karnes December 9, 1876. Her death occurred August 29, 1919 and he died January 14, 1938. Both are buried in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery near Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky.

"He attended the common schools of Ohio County and, with his brothers, a boarding academy at South Carrolton, Kentucky, operated by Professor Alexander Gray. Later he attended Bethel College at Russellville, Kentucky, in the academy department, one school year. His father promised each of his three sons an education at Bethel College or a tract of land. The youngest, Jacob Edwin Rowe, chose the education and James Albert took the land, but the eldest, Richard Perry, chose one year at Bethel College and a smaller tract of land located near the West Point Baptist church known locally as "The Captain's Farm."

"At Nineteen years of age he was about five feet nine inches in height, weighed about 150 pounds, had dark hair, fair complexion and blue eyes. In physical appearance both he and his father resembled members of the Ross family. We used to have a tintype picture of him taken at age nineteen. He was wearing a mustache and small chin whiskers at that time. Later in life he wore a full beard until 1898 when he started shaving clean, only occasionally coming out with a mustache.

"At an early age he demonstrated considerable initiative. He commenced teaching school when he was quite young, probably eighteen. When only twenty-one years of age he became County School Commissioner of Ohio County. Since this appointment then was made by the County Fiscal Court, composed of all the magistrates in the county, most of whom were Democrats while he was a Republican, this was a distinct achievement, but the fact that he was kin by blood or marriage to nearly half the families in the county may have contributed to his appointment.

"He resigned as County School Commissioner to accept appointment as U. S. Postmaster at Hartford, serving from July 1, 1879 to August 20, 1885. He was succeeded by his brother, Jacob Edwin, who was a Democrat. While postmaster, he built a brick store building in Hartford in which he conducted a general mercantile business, and he also operated the principal hotel in Hartford in which he and his wife had their home. His brother, James Albert Rowe, assisted in the operation and management of the store. They were three popular brothers at Hartford in those days. Both he and Jacob Edwin studied law, Jacob Edwin following it more intensively and going on to become one of the prominent lawyers in that part of the state. Richard Perry continued his law study intermittently through life and eventually was admitted to the bar but never devoted his time exclusively to that profession, that being sort of an avocation for him.

"His mercantile venture was not a success. In fact he lost heavily and finally had to dispose of all his property to pay his creditors. No doubt much of his financial difficulty was due to his engaging in too many different enterprises without sufficient capital and not giving enough attention to the store. After disposing of all his interests in Ohio County, he and his wife went to Graves County where both had many relatives in that and adjoining counties (mainly the Richard P. Taylor and Jacob Karnes families) and there engaged successfully in the timber business. Later, from 1890 to 1895, much time was spent on the waters of Sandy Creek, a tributary of the Tennessee River, in timber operation.

"In 1894, during the so-called "Cleveland Panic", he bought a steamboat, the Monie Bauer, from Charlie Bauer, entirely on credit. This deal included six barges. Backed financially by a wealthy timber manufacturing concern, Kilgore & Company, he was the only timber buyer going up the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers that summer paying cash for timber. He paid for the boat and barges within six months from the profits. In December, 1895 he moved his home and business headquarters to Paducah and from there operated several years on the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers, buying timber and towing it to Paducah where he furnished Kilgore & Company all their timber requirements, and also sold timber to every sawmill and timber manufacturer in Paducah. He was a licensed pilot for the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers and for a portion of the Ohio. He always had a pilot employed but took turns in piloting the boat, and especially in storms or dangerous situations he chose to handle the wheel.

"This timber business was one of his most successful enterprises. The life, though, was a rough one. Traditionally a steamboat pilot was expected to maintain an iron discipline. River boat crews were a rough and ready lot and so were many of the boat's customers, both in the woods and on the city levees. A Winchester repeating rifle, a double barreled shotgun and a Colt Navy revolver were kept handy on the boat. He was a good shot with the rifle and, for prestige purposes, often demonstrated his skill of which he was very proud.

"In 1898, a muscle controlling one side of his vocal chords became paralyzed, causing the Adam's Apple to be drawn a little to one side. Thereafter he could speak distinctly only in a whisper, or a loud shout, but not in normal tone satisfactorily. This affliction caused him to decide to leave the river and, in the Spring of 1899, he sold the boat and barges to The Paducah Towing Company and made arrangements to retire to farming.

"It was then that he bought, from his wife's parents, a farm near Island, in McLean County, Kentucky. His father-in-law, Reuben M. Karnes, was nearing seventy years of age and rapidly becoming blind. He, Richard P. Rowe, and his wife owned and lived on this farm until 1907. They moved away from the farm in December, 1907, spent 18 months in New Mexico farming and trading, returned to Island in 1909, living in the town but still operating the farm, until it was sold to Morgan N. Yeiser in 1914. (The deed of conveyance, dated November 27, 1914, is on file in Book 6, page 460, at the McLean County Court Clerk's office. The deed excludes the two acre family cemetery where a number of our ancestors are buried. I have a copy of that deed. I also have a map showing the location of the property and the cemetery just west of the community of Buttonsberry on the NE corner of the intersection of KY Hwy 85 and county road 891. - E. P Rowe, Jr., 6/8/94)

"In January, 1915 he and his son, Ernest Perry Rowe, and their families, moved to Owensboro, Kentucky. They opened a law office in the Smith & Bates Building at the corner of Fourth and St. Ann streets. Nominally he was a partner in the firm of Rowe and Rowe, but actually devoted most of his time to a farm loan business and to the management of his farm near Red Hill in Daviess County. This farm he later traded for one near Macedonia in Daviess County where he lived with his wife, his youngest son, and his parents. After the death of his wife and his parents, he first lived with his son, Ernest, and later with his son, Eric Judson Rowe, until his death which occurred shortly before he would have been eighty-four years of age.

"In the last few years of his life he became interested in the study of geology and as a result of this study he opened a strip mine (coal) on his farm which supplied his own fuel needs and that of a few neighbors. He also procured and traded in oil and gas leases and promoted the drilling of exploratory wells in Daviess County and Ohio County, and was modestly successful in procuring oil production. Only in the last year or so of his life did he give up trying to be active."

He and his wife are buried in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetary, ESE of Owensboro in Daviess Co.,KY. They had two boys who were born prematurely and died at birth in 1877 and 1879. They then had three sons: (1) Ernest Perry Rowe, b. 4 Jan 1890, d. 28 Jul 1981; (2) John Mason Rowe, b. 6 Sep 1894, d. 23 Nov 1906; (3) Eric Judson Rowe, b. 7 Aug 1898, d. 26 Oct 1990. Parents: John Plain Rowe and Rebecca Ursula Igleheart.

He was orderly and methodical in the conduct of his affairs. During his last illness, when he realized that the end of his life was near, he called in the family and gave instructions as to how his estate should be managed and settled.
