bullet Ernest Perry Rowe(13) (8)(63) (photo) was born on 4 Jan 1890 in Graves Co., KY. He died on 28 Jul 1981 in Slidell, St. Tammany Parish, LA. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Owensboro, KY.

Ernest Perry Rowe, son of Richard Perry Rowe and Lillian May (Karnes) Rowe, was born on the Richard P. Taylor farm near Mayfield in Graves County, Kentucky on January 4, 1890. The first four years of his life were spent with his parents in Henry County Tennessee. Attended St. Mary's Academy in Paducah, Kentucky irregularly for three school years. Was taught to read before entering school and became a voracious reader. When his school books were purchased before entering Fourth Grade in Paducah, he read a primary history of the United States through before school started. After the family moved to McLean County, he attended West Island District School #32, beginning Fall 1899 through Spring 1906. These terms first were for twenty weeks, later twenty-four weeks. The school was not graded and the teachers taught whatever subjects for which the parents furnished the books, viz., he went through Lynn's College Physiology twice at different sessions. Did not attend school 1906-1907 (excepting in Spring 1906) but worked regularly on the farm as a full hand.

Attended Eighth Grade 1908 in Roswell, New Mexico and completed a heavy Freshman course at Roswell High School during the school year 1908-1909, carrying six subjects which he could well do due to his age. He also played football every minute of every game the high school team played that year. They only played three games, that being the school's first year in football. RHS lost every game.

The family having returned to Kentucky in May, 1909, he attended Bethel College in Russellville, Kentucky the school year of 1909-1910 where he took two high school subjects, Mathematics and Latin, and four college subjects, English, Science (Chemistry), German and Ancient History. During the following four years, he worked part time on his father's farm and part time in the law office of his father in Island. Also during this four years he completed correspondence courses in double entry bookkeeping and typing with International Correspondence Schools, and two years law study with LaSalle Extension University. In the Summer of 1914, attended an eight week session at the College of Law, University of Kentucky, studying Code Pleading and Court Practice.

Prior to attending the University of Kentucky, at the April, 1914 Term of the Muhlenburg Circuit Court at Greenville, Kentucky, he was admitted to the practice of law in Kentucky after first being duly examined according to the then laws of Kentucky by a committee of lawyers appointed by the court.

Most important work thereafter was twelve years private practice at Owensboro, Kentucky, and many years thereafter as attorney and executive in various Federal government positions, among them, Legal Advisor for the Kentucky-Tennessee District of the U. S. Bureau of Prohibition, and later, Legal Advisor and Assistant Administrator for the Ohio-Michigan-Kentucky-Tennessee District when the Bureau was transferred to the U. S. Department of Justice. Also was District Director of the Third District of Kentucky (38 counties), Works Progress Administration (WPA) for five years, with offices in Lexington, Kentucky.

He had for several years suffered with a drinking problem which, after several stays at a sanitarium and other efforts failed, finally caused him to lose his Government employment in 1938 and brought on financial problems. In the summer of 1938 his second wife, Pauline Gordon, took her son and went to Owensboro to stay at her parent's home until she could find employment. Ernest moved from job to job in various locations finally ending up with the Brock Candy Co. in Cleveland, Ohio where he joined Alchoholics Annoymous and got control of the drinking habit. After a separation of about ten years, he rejoined his wife who was then living in Clarksville, Tennessee and was employed at nearby Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

While in Clarksville he became an agent for Consolidated Insurance Co. of Nashville, TN and later for Mutual of Omaha until November 1956 when he and his wife moved to Bellaire, Michigan where his son then had a television sales and service business and Pauline took a position with the Farmers Home Administration. Pauline retired in October 1968 and they both returned to Clarksville, TN.

With Ernest's advancing years he was requiring more and more personal attention until it reached a point that she could no longer provide for his needs. In the summer of 1979 it was decided to move him to Slidell, LA where he could be cared for by his son, Perry, and family. It soon became apparent that he could not be left at home alone during the day and he was admitted to Greenbriar Nursing Home, only a few blocks from his son's home, where he remained until his death on July 28, 1981 at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 24 days. He is buried in the Rowe plot of Elmwood Cemetery in Owensboro, KY. He was a lifelong Baptist and a dedicated Republican. His SS# 406-12-7087. His NSSAR No. 88003, Michigan State No. 2232.

He was married September 20, 1911 to Eva Mary Eaton at the parsonage of the Methodist Church in South Carolton, Kentucky, by Rev. Allis J. Bennett. Jessie Eaton, cousin of the bride, and Leo Shacklett, were the witnesses. To this couple three children were born. Their names are: (1) John Richard Rowe, born July 12, 1912; (2) Dorothy Lou Rowe, born April 24, 1915; (3) Eva Lillian Rowe, born March 11, 1918. Eva Mary (Eaton) Rowe died May 5, 1923. She was a member of Settle Memorial Church and Accacia Chapter #46 Eastern Star, both of Owensboro. Her interment was in the Rowe plot of Elmwood Cemetery in Owensboro, Kentucky.

On October 29, 1925 he married Veva Pauline Gordon in the parsonage of Settle Memorial Church in Owensboro, Rev. B. G. Hodge officiating and Carl Carpenter and Sara Waltrip witnessing the ceremony. She was called "Polly" by her husband and most friends. Their only child was Ernest Perry Rowe, Jr., born February 17, 1927. Pauline (Gordon) Rowe died January 23, 1985. bullet George Rowe(13) (8)(63) (64)(9) was born on 27 Mar 1788 in Culpeper Co., VA, USA. He died on 12 Jun 1859 in Ohio Co., KY. He was buried in Walton's Creek Church Cemetery, Ohio Co., KY.

This George Rowe, son of the Revolutionary War veteran George Rowe, was born in Culpeper County, Virginia March 27, 1788 and died in Ohio County, Kentucky June 12, 1859. These dates were copied from the stone at the head of his grave in the Walton's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, near Centertown, Kentucky. The stone also bears the inscription: "Moved to Ky April 1806."

He married Mary Brown, his first wife, in Madison Co., Virginia on, or soon after, January 8, 1806 which is the date on their marriage bond.. To them was born five children whose names were: Robert, who married Nancy Ross; Edmund, who married a widow, Mrs. Amelia Render; Braxton (or Brackstone), who married Ann Bishop; Thomas, who married Mary Boyd Maddox; and James, who married Sallie Bilbro.

His first wife died in Ohio County and is buried in Walton's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The tombstone at her grave is badly eroded and broken so only part of the inscription thereon is legible. The legible inscriptions read, "Mary Brown" and "Died in 1822."

On December 19, 1824 he married Mary Elmira Imbler of Muhlenberg County, Kentucky and to them also five children were born. Their names were: Frances ("Fanny"), who married Isom Chapman; Elizabeth ("Betsy"), who married Henry Lucas; Nancy, who married John Griggsby; Rachel, who married Aaron Griggsby; and William Imbler ("Billy I"), who married Martha Baker.

George was a farmer and also the local auctioneer. The best description we have of him and his activities is found on page 66 of a biographical publication entitled "Ohio County in the Olden Days" by Harrison D. Taylor. The following account is copied from that book:

"Largely intermingled with the population of our county is the Rowe Family. George, Edmund and Robert Rowe were among the first settlers and best farmers on Walton's Creek. Industrious in their habits, honest in their dealings, social and jovial in their intercourse with others, and fond of all kind of jokes, they never failed to have some good humored story to tell each other.

"George Rowe was a remarkable man in various respects, possessing a splendid physique, fine intellectual head and face, and sound practical sense. He, like many of the other earliest pioneers, could neither read nor write, yet his powers of mental arithmetic or calculation were remarkable. For many years he sold the greater amounts of the meats and vegetables that were bought by the citizens of Hartford. He was never known to fail in filling his engagements. Regardless of the state of the weather or how dark the previous night, he would be in town with his marketing and ready to sell before his customers were fairly out of their beds. No matter how many articles the purchaser might buy, Rowe, without slate or pencil, could tell you to a cent the amount of the bill, and with equal facility he could perform almost any calculation involving addition, subtraction, multiplication or division. His marketing was always equal to what he represented it to be. With a proper education he might have become a leader among men.

"George and Edmund left large families, and a large portion of their descendants are frugal, industrious and punctual in their dealings -- and remarkable for the good quality of their marketing."

From page 69 of this same book, in regard to the churches of Ohio County, is copied the following:

"Beaver Dam and Walton's Creek were the two most prominent and flourishing churches in Ohio County. The Ashleys, Mortons, Popes, Tichenors and Rowes were the most zealous and active members and worshippers at Walton's Creek, and the Athertons, Colemans and Renders at the Beaver Dam church."

In politics George Rowe was a Jeffersonian Democrat as were most of the Rowes prior to the candidacy of Abraham Lincoln for President. Many then followed Lincoln into the Republican Party.

His last wife, considerably younger than her husband, outlived him more than twenty-three years. Her grave also is near his and the following inscription can be read today on the stone erected there: Mary -- Wife of George Rowe -- Born Oct. 20, 1800 -- Died Jan. 11, 1883.

Several monuments are in this cemetery for members of the Rowe family buried there. On some the name is spelled "ROW" and on others "ROWE." Many of the early settlers at best spelled phonetically and to please their own personal views about spelling.

ADDED NOTE: The Rowe Register Source R-01007 gives his birthdate as 4 November 1788. This date is incorrect and should be corrected. The correct birthday, now entered herein, has been verified on the tombstone and a photograph is available. (Ernest P. Rowe, Jr., 13 August 1996)

Parents: George Rowe and Rachel.

He was married to Mary (Polly) Brown on 8 Jan 1806 in Madison Co. VA. Children were: Robert Rowe, Edmund Rowe, Braxton Rowe, Thomas R. Rowe, James Rowe.

He was married to Mary Elmira Imbler on 19 Dec 1824 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. Children were: Frances Rowe, Elizabeth "Betsy" Rowe, Nancy Rowe, Rachel Rowe, William Imbler Rowe.

bullet George Rowe(63) (8)(54) was born about 1753 in Culpeper Co., VA, USA. He died in 1827 in Ohio Co., KY. He was buried in Walton's Creek Church Cemetery, Ohio Co., KY.

This George Rowe served from early in November, 1780 until January 21, 1782, a total period of nearly 27 months, as a private in Captain Thomas Young's Company of The Western Battalion, commanded by Colonel Joseph Crockett in the Virginia State Service during the Revolutionary War. His military pay records spell his surname as both Rowe and Row. He was the son of the George Rowe (Row) who executed a will in Culpeper County, Virginia dated March 5, 1785 which was disavowed by all the heirs by a contract dated June 18, 1790 in which they divided the estate in a way more satisfactory to them.

This George Rowe lived in Culpeper County, Virginia and all his children were born there. He and his wife and children, and all the husbands and wives of his children then married, and possibly with other relatives and neighbors, migrated from Culpeper County to Kentucky in April, 1806. The names of his nine children are listed below but not in the order of their birth because we do not have the dates of birth of some of them. They were: George Rowe, who married Mary Brown; Thomas Rowe, who married Margaret Brown; Edmund Rowe, who married Mary Phipps; Robert Rowe, who married Matilda Underwood; Judith Rowe, who married Robert Brown; Elizabeth Rowe, who married David Ashby; Nancy Rowe, who married William Ashby; Sally Rowe, who married Peter Ashby; and Anne Rowe, who married Benjamin Southard.

The Rowe caravan followed the Wilderness Trail to Cumberland Gap and from there headed across the Bluegrass Region to the wild, unsettled portion of Ohio County, Kentucky near where the present village of Centertown is now located.

The Rowe families took up or bought adjacent tracts of land, began the clearing of the wild land, the building of homes, and the establishment of a settlement first known as "The Rowe Settlement," later named Centertown.

George Rowe and his wife spent the remainder of their lives on a farm in this settlement in Ohio County, Kentucky and are buried there in the Walton's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. We have no documentary proof of the name of his wife though some family members claim her name was Rachel. We also have no documentary proof of their birth dates, but some estimate may be made from the known dates of the birth of some of their children, vis., Edmund and George, born respectively in 1785 and 1788. Also he was old enough to serve in the Army in the Revolutionary War. It would be reasonable to assume that George Rowe and his wife were born "circa 1760." Family information is that he lived to be an old man.

ADDED NOTES:

Parents: George Rowe.

He was married to Rachel before 1784 in VA. Children were: Edmund Rowe , Anna (Millie) Rowe, Thomas Rowe, George Rowe, Nancy Rowe, Elizabeth Rowe, Sarah (Sallie) Rowe, Robert Rowe, Judith (Judy) Rowe.

bullet George Rowe(13) (9)(14) died about 1790 in Culpeper Co., VA, USA.(8)

This George Rowe/Row/Roe is the earliest ancestor of our Rowe lineage about whom we have any record. The surname is spelled two ways on those records, as Row and as Roe. These records are all dated in the 1700’s and typically such records were dependant upon the scrivener writing the document to determine the spelling of proper names verbally given to him for the record. The earliest records are those of the land transactions when he acquired property in Culpeper Co., Virginia, in 1753 and 1754. That property was on both sides of the Robinson River and included part of Pass mountain on the west side of the river. That part of Culpeper Co. later became part of Madison Co. I made copies of those transaction on a visit to Culpeper Co. in 1999. Next are records of his having provided public service goods of beef and corn during the period of the American Revolutionary War. Last are the records relating to his Will and the division of his estate by his heirs.

The following is the text of an article in the Hartford, KY., Times-News, Aug. 30, 1984, page 4-B. It is from the Column, Western Waters, written by William J. and Julie Teresa Shull and subtitled, Ancestral Plantations of the Past, Rich Hills.

" 'Rich Hills' plantation, Culpeper County, Virginia. was the home of George Rowe, who obtained the property from .John and Elizabeth Frogg of Prince William County, Virginia July 5, 1753, George Rowe lived upon this land when the transaction was made. The property was originally owned by Lord Fairfax who, as proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia, had deeded it to John Frogg and Michael Wallace in joint tenancy May 4, 1751. A petition from the latter August 20, 1752, whereby Frogg was sole owner. Recorded Culpeper Court, September 25; 1752.

" 'Rich Hills' consisted of 416 acres on both sides of the Robinson River. Rowe paid 45 pounds in Virginia currency for this property. It was surveyed by George Mason.

" It is said that 'Rich Hills' plantation was in that part of Culpeper County which was set aside as Madison County in 1792. This writer has no idea when Madison County was created but we do have reference of the upper Robinson River in Madison as early as 1754. Also, the marriage of a daughter of George Rowe is recorded in Culpeper, not Madison, in 1793. Also reference points to "Rich Halls" indicate it being more towards the Rappahannock River and north of the Rapidan River, showing it to be closer to current Rapahannock County in our judgement.

" On August 10, 1774, George Rowe gave 95 acres to Robert Render which lay on the south of Robinson River and 'Rich Hills'. Render was a son-in-law of Rowe, having married Sarah Rowe. There is no mention of George Rowe's wife. She probably died many years prior to 1774.

" On June 18, 1790, the heirs of George Rowe divided the estate. George Rowe, Junior, got 300 acres of 'Rich Hills'; Mary Rowe Hughes received 100 acres between 'Rich Hills' and the Render gift; Ann Rowe received 100 acres as did her sister, Frankey Rowe, which indicates more land in the area than we have deed for. After nearly two centuries, these may or may not be in the county seats of Culpeper, Madison or Rappahannock." (Note: The original article spells the name of the river as Robertson rather than Robinson, as on current maps of Madison County. - EPR, Jr., 27 April 1999)

The following information is from the files of my father, Ernest Perry Rowe, and written by him in about 1958:

"A written contract dated June 18, 1790 is on record in Culpeper Co., Virginia Clerk's office, signed by his heirs, disavowing his Will and distributing his estate according to their own wishes. This document furnishes about all the information we have about him and his children. The signatures to this document are: George Row, Robert Render, Ralph Hughes, Ann Row and Frankie Row. You will note that his daughters, Mrs. Robert Render and Mrs. Ralph Hughes did not sign this contract, but their husbands did. At that time, under existing Virginia laws, married women were not qualified to manage or control their property. Their husbands signed in their behalf. Ann Row and Frankie Row were single and over 21 years of age and were qualified to sign for themselves."

Another descendant of this ancestor, Patricia (Rowe) Brooks of Liberty, KY., provided copies of the documentation used to support her approved supplementary application with the DAR under her descent from this George Rowe/Row/Roe who has been recognized as a patriot to the American Revolutionary cause by providing material aid.

On pages 39 to 41 of the book, An 18th Century Perspective: Culpeper County, is a list of Revolutionary Petitioners. Preceding the list of names is the statement, "The following signers of Culpeper County legislative petitions in the 1770's on record in the Virginia State Library are presumed to have been Minutemen." Included in that list is the name of George Row. The book was compiled and edited by Mary Stevens Jones and published by the Culpeper Historical Society, Inc., Culpeper , Virginia, and is dated 1976. (Ernest P. Rowe, Jr., 18 June 1997)
