Aden Rinckey(13)
(11) (photo) was born on 6 May 1899 in Carson
City, MI, USA. He died on 23 Sep 1965 in Traverse City, Michigan, USA. He was
buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Bellaire, Antrim Co., MI.
The following biography was written by Ernest P. Rowe, Jr., July 1996.
I know very little about James Aden Rinckey's years prior to my becoming his
son-in-law except what I had been told by him or my wife, Norma, who was the
first of his three children. When we first met after my marriage, he and his
family were living in the Village of Bellaire, Michigan a resort and tourist
community in the heart of the Chain-O-Lakes area north of Traverse City, MI.
He was known simply as "Jim" by all the natives, summer residents
and tourists who knew him. He owned and operated "Jim's Place," a popular
sporting goods and package liquor store located at the curve on Hwy M-88 at the
eastern village limits. He was a sportsman who loved to fly fish and hunt, and
enjoyed baseball, although his seasonal business restricted those activities.
The fishing editor of Fur, Fish & Game magazine, Ben Robinson, became a
close friend of Jim's and wrote several feature articles in the magazine about
his fly fishing experiences with Jim.
Jim had been employed by the Fischer Body Division of General Motors in Lansing,
MI, before moving to Bellaire during the "Great Depression" years,
probably in the early 1930's, since Norma was born in Lansing in January 1929.
Upon moving to Bellaire, they lived at the home of his wife's parents, Fred
and Maude Ludwig, until he built the family home next to his place of business.
He worked for some period of time for the Public Works Administration (PWA),
an agency of the U.S. Government created in 1933 to create jobs by the construction
of roads, buildings, dams and other projects. Prior to World War II, Jim bought
a Sinclair gas station which, I believe, also had a small cafe or diner. Shortly
after taking over that business, he closed the diner and started selling fishing
tackle and live bait. That change proved profitable and he added a larger stock
of various types of sporting goods and equipment, and became a franchised dealer
of Johnson outboard motors. He also obtained a license to sell package liquor
and, except for a drug store in Alden, MI which maintained only a limited stock,
Jim's Place was the only package liquor dealer in Antrim County.
During World War II and the period of gasoline rationing, Jim obtained a taxi
license and, using the family car, began providing taxi service to the summer
residents and tourists arriving by train who otherwise would have had no transportation.
After the war he quit selling gasoline and devoted total effort to the seasonal,
but more profitable, sporting goods, bait and tackle, and the sales, rental and
service of outboard motors. He relied on the state controlled income from package
liquor sales to pay the year around operating and overhead expenses. Jim's Place
became a very popular place to the summer residents, vacationers, and weekend
sportsmen as well as many of the natives. Most of the area resorts and rental
cottage owners furnished fishing boats for their guests, but they sent their
guests to Jim's Place to rent small fishing motors. Jim could provide not only
the fishing and hunting equipment, and the beverages of choice, but also helpful
information on where, when, and how to catch fish or find other game.
Early one cold winter morning in about 1950, the store building caught fire apparently
from a heater in the area of the minnow tanks. The Bellaire Volunteer Fire Dept.
responded with their small truck with a limited supply of water. They connected
a hose to the village fire hydrant nearby for water but it was frozen. Fire
departments were dispatched from neighboring villages but by the time they were
finally able to get water, the building was totally ablaze and there was nothing
that could be done to save it. Typically of Jim, he went right to work on a
plan to rebuild and within a few months a new store building was completed and
ready for business.
Jim was an amazing person. His formal education was limited to elementary school
but that was not to hold him back from setting and achieving his goals. He could
communicate and deal with top level corporate executives as easily as he could
his neighbor, or even the village deaf mute, John Dolotta. He was very industrious
and innovative. His idea of drilling an indoor water well in the shop and bait
wing of the new building was unique and very successful. The well was protected
from freezing temperatures, the water pipes were routed through the fishing worm
beds to provide moisture from condensation and cooling, then to the minnow tanks.
His acquisition of the head waters of a stream for a wealthy summer resident
and the design and building of a trout pond on that stream was a real accomplishment,
particularly the design of the tube and baffle system that caused the water from
the bottom of the pond to go up and over a baffle to exit through the dam. That
system assured fresh water at all depths of the pond and a more ideal water temperature.
Jim was active in civic affairs of the community and, at times, quite outspoken
about his position on civic issues. When the owner of a flying service that
had operated the small Bellaire airport moved to Alaska, Jim, who had never flown
in his life, was named as airport manager to allow the airport to remain approved
as an emergency facility. In doing so, he was instrumental in getting Lamina
Dies & Tools of Mt. Clemens, MI, to take over the facilities and establish
a new manufacturing plant at that location. He was also instrumental in getting
Shanty Creek Lodge, a successful year around skiing and recreational resort,
to locate on property just SE of Bellaire.
He purchased about a quarter mile of frontage on a county road just east of the
store that ran beside Craven Park and Bellaire Trout Pond and during the slow
winter seasons he designed and built several houses on that property which he
sold and financed himself. His successful goal in building and selling these
homes was to provide a retirement income. He and his wife moved into the last
house that he built.
I do not recall when Jim sold the business and retired, but I believe it was
about a year before his wife, Olive, died in 1962. Jim died of cancer in 1965
at Osteopathic Hospital, Traverse City, MI. He remained a resident of Bellaire,
MI. until his death. Parents:
Jason Aden Rinckey
and
Ada Elizabeth Gonser.
He was married to
Olive May Ludwig on 16 Jul 1922 in Lansing, Ingham Co., MI. Both Jim and
Olive Rinckey were avid bowlers, as were many of the year-round residents of
Antrim County and other northerm Michigan areas. Bowling was an ideal indoor
recreation during the off-season winter months. I don't know all of the many
trophys either of them received, but we still have two handsome trophys that
Jim received as a member of the team that won the Michigan State Bowlers Assn.
Five Men Championship, Handicap Division in 1953 and 1957. Children were:

Marjorie Ader's final letter to her Mom
Margie and Bob Ader and daughters, Lauren and Hayley, had just come to Slidell
from Conifer, CO, when her mother, Norma Lou (Rinckey) Rowe, died suddenly on
Sunday, June 14, 1992. Just before the funeral Margie had handwritten a letter
to her Mom, which she read to her mother at the service. The letter read as follows:
Dear Mom,
I miss you, Mom. I wish you were here.
Our visit was cut too short. But, they were all too short.
How could I begin to tell you what is on my mind today? You should be here for
this. You loved to have all our family together. You loved having your grandchildren
around you. You loved having friends over - the more the better.
Momma, you touched so many lives. You really made a difference. You didn't
sit back and wait for other people to do something - you jumped right in to get
things moving.
I was never very aggressive or outgoing while growing up, or even now, for that
matter. But you helped me to believe in myself at times when I needed to the
most. You showed me how to reach deep within myself and pull out the strength
I needed to do what had to be done, or do what I wanted to do.
You gave a lot to your children and you gave up a lot for us. What we may have
lacked in material things, you and Dad definitely made up for in love and unity.
We have a close family and it is because of the love that you and Daddy had,
and showed, for us.
My children may never know you in person but, believe me, they will know all
about you.
Mom, we are all very proud of you. You've worked hard all your life.
Please be happy and rest peacefully knowing that you really made a difference.
I love you very much, Mom. We all love you. May God bless you.
