A Revolutionary War veteran. The following information was obtained from my father's notes:

Jesse Ashby was born in Virginia in 1738. His first marriage was to Nancy Williams. His second was to Tamar Ruby. By them he had thirteen children. It is not well documented as to which of his wives was the mother of Elizabeth Ashby. In my review of the data in Dad's file on Jesse Ashby it appears that Elizabeth was the daughter of Tamar Ruby. This is further evidenced by the fact that one of Elizabeth's daughters was named Tamar. There is a great deal of information about his marriages, his children, dates of birth, marriages & deaths, all on one sheet of paper. Copies will be furnished to any one who needs this information. Jesse Ashby served in Capt. Daniel's Company in the Virginia Line. He died in Ohio Co., KY, and is buried in Walton's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery near Centertown, in Ohio County, Kentucky. His wife, Tamar, is buried beside him. I have visited this cemetery on several occasions and have taken video pictures of both graves. I also have photographs (prints) of those and other ancestral graves. Ernest Perry Rowe, Jr. 5/16/1994

bullet Capt. John ("Rufus") Ashby(4) (20) was born between 1707 and 1710 in Fauquier Co., VA. He died about 1789.
From Va. doc. 31 he was entitled to land for three years' service as Capt. in the Continental Line. "John ASHBY was Captain 3d Regiment, July 22, 1776; settled his account as a continental officer from Jan 1, 1777, to Nov. 1, same year. He was on the list of invalids late in 1781. He is, if living, otherwise his heirs are, entitled to bounty land for a service of more than 3 years." (pp. 3, 16.). Will dated Oct, 1788; Will probated 13 May, 1789, (Fauquier), VA.m/2 Catherine HUFMAN, 1781. Capt. John ASHBY's marriage contract with Catherine HUFMAN is recorded in Fauquier Co. under date of 1781. She renounced all claim on his estate if he should die, except 1/3 his Fauquier property. He was Captain, 2nd Co. Va. Rangers, Oct 21, 1755. (Gen. Daniel MORGAN was a private in his company, ¾25; native of Pennsylvania; farmer; enlisted Aug 30, 1755,) He was with Washington during the Braddock campaign. "He bore Washington's dispatches containing the news of Braddock's defeat from Winchester to Williamsburg, VA., and returned with Gov. Dinwiddie's reply before the English commander supposed he had started on his journey." A letter from Williamsburg, June 2, 1774, says that at the battle of Pt. Pleasant the indians had killed the noted Captain ASHBY, who in the last war brought the first account of Braddock's defeat to this city with amazing expedition." (Force's Arch., I. 373.) This reported death of Captain ASHBY was false, as the Western Journal states that, Oct 10, 1774, after the battle of Pt. Pleasant, Jno. P. WILLIS, John ASHBY and William BOLLAND, of Stafford and Fauquier Cos., visited Kentucky in a perrogue, and passed down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans, thence via Pensacola and Charleston to Virginia.(W. J., XII.116; Collins, Ky., I. 18.) Thus it appears that Col. ASHBY was a participant in the battle of Pt. Pleasant. Dr. T. A. A. states:

"Col. A. held a commission in the Colonial Army. He comanded Ft. Ashby on Patterson Creek in W. Va. during the Indian Wars, and was with Washington during his Indian campaigns and at Braddock's defeat. He went to Ky and remained from 1770 to 1774; located a tract of land, 2,000 a., in what is now Woodford Co., on the Lexington and Versailles pike, granted to him by the State of Virginia for services in the French and Indian Wars prior to 1764, as per deed in my hands signed by Thomas Jefferson, Gov., in the 4th year of the Commonwealth. He was also presented with a silver watch by the House of Burgesses for gallant services in the Indian War. This watch is still in the possession of a member of my family. He was one of the vestry of the first Episcopal Church established in the Valley of VA., the old Chapel near Millwood, Clarke Co." (M. II., 281.)
