American Revolutionary War veteran. He served from Oct. 1776 to July 1779 as a Drummer in Capt. Jeremiah Burrough's Co. of the Batallion of Forces commanded by Col. Seth Warner of the Continental Line. His record in the National Archives is very complete. It shows where he was all the time he was in the service and shows him present at the battles of Fort Stark and at Fort Bennington. Born in England, birth date unknown. His will dated 1/11/1790 was probated 8/13/1801 and it is assumed that he died shortly before that time. In his will he refers to his wife's name as "Mary." The Will is recorded in Will Book 1, page 5 in Tazewell Co., Virginia, Court Clerk's office. The names of his daughters do not appear in his will. Under Virginia law, married women could not own or manage their property. Their husbands were their legal guardians. An unmarried woman could own property, but apparently all of his daughters were married, their names did not appear in the Will nor in any other available document. Copies of this will are in our file. He signed his name "Oney" to his Will. His military records show it "Olney" in some places and "Oney" in others. Copies of his military pay records are in our files.
