He spent his youth on the farm. On March 14, 1854 he was married to Rebecca Melissa Gilmore in Hancock County by the Rev. James E. Stone, pastor of the United Baptist Church. The official witnesses were David Adams, George W. Wheatly and Samuel F. Brown. After their marriage they spent the remainder of their lives on a farm near Patesville, Hancock Co., KY where he was engaged in farming excepting for the period from October 5, 1861 to December 26, 1864 when he served in the United States Army. Their children were:

On October 5, 1861 he enlisted as a private in Company L, 3rd Regiment Volunteers, Kentucky Cavalry at Camp Anderson in Hancock County, KY. His official record shows that he was sworn in at Owensboro, KY. He served with the same company through the Civil War. The company was based at Owensboro where he was stationed until December 31, 1863. For the remainder of the war he was on detached service in Georgia operating mainly in the vicinity of Ringold and Resaca. His record shows he was captured September 9, 1864 while foraging near Atlanta. Either he must have escaped or obtained his release on an exchange of prisoners for his official record shows he was with his company December 26, 1864 at Savannah, Georgia when the entire company was mustered out.

At one time while in the service he was thrown from a horse and sustained an injury. He eventually drew a pension, his pension number being #417167. His military record discloses that he was five feet seven inches in height, complexion red, eyes blue, hair light. Actually, according to statements of those who knew him, his hair was red and he had the turbulent disposition that traditionally goes with red hair.

The Lynchs were of Irish lineage. Thomas Grubbs Lynch lived to be over eighty-seven years old. In his last years he displayed great pride in his service in the Union Army. One of his customs, well remembered by some of his grandchildren, was to get out his old army uniform, ostensibly for airing, hang it on the clothesline in the front yard of their home which was located on a much travelled road leading to Patesville where all passing could view it. He died at his home June 16, 1919 and is buried in the Wheatly family cemetery in the Patesville community.
