Biographical notes by Ernest P. Rowe, Jr., August 12, 1996:
I know very little of Fred Ludwig's background prior to my marriage to his granddaughter,
Norma Rinckey. At the time of our marriage he and his wife owned and lived in
a house at the SE corner of the intersection of Hwy M-88 and the C&O Railroad
tracks, diagonally across from the railroad station in Bellaire, MI. At that
time the street was called Bridge Street but was later renamed Cayuga Street.
He had retired some years before I met him, but both he and his wife often did
seasonal work at a vegetable canning plant in Central Lake, a village about 15
miles north of Bellaire. I believe that at one time he worked at a furniture
factory in Lansing, MI and later owned and operated a butcher shop in Mancelona,
MI. I do not recall having seen his first name spelled differently than above.
It appears as "Fred" on his marriage certificate, and that is the
way he signed his name.
He was affectionately known as "Grandpa Fred" by his grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. He was very proud of his East Prussian (he emphasized
"East") heritage and each Fall made several large crocks of sauerkraut
which he allowed to ferment behind the large wood burning cookstove in the kitchen
and were later stored in the unheated, but closed-in, back porch of the house.
Over the years he had collected a large number of antique hand tools and old
farm items that he loved to show off and demonstrate. Each year he would plant
and nurture a vegetable garden and seemed to enjoy having a surplus of produce
to give to friends and neighbors. He spent a lot of time at his son- in-law's
store, Jim's Place, often helping with work to be done there, and otherwise greeting
and talking to the patrons. He also helped Jim in the construction of new homes
in the winter months. His two grandsons always found a friend in Grandpa Fred
when they returned from hunting or fishing and had fresh game to be cleaned.
He and his wife were married in the Methodist Church, Bellaire, MI. The marriage
certificate lists, "Fred Ludwig of Custer Township and Miss Maude Jackson
of Kearney Township." Both townships are in Antrim County, MI. (Each county
of Michigan is subdivided into townships.)
Fred Lugwig died at Munson Hospital, Traverse City, Michigan but was a resident
of Bellaire, MI at the time of his death. He is buried beside his wife in Mancelona
Cemetery, Mancelona, MI.

The following comments were written by Ernest P. Rowe, Jr., August 1996.
My knowledge of Olive May (Ludwig) Rinckey is limited primarily to that obtained
after my marriage to her daughter, Norma. At the time I met her she still had
two sons in high school, was not only busy with household chores as a wife and
mother, but was also actively involved in assisting with the family business,
described in the biography of her husband, Jim Rinckey. Olive was the one who
did the bookkeeping, paid the bills and usually made the weekly run to the State
Liquor Store in Charlevoix, MI to pick up wholesale liquor. During the peak
business season she often spent much time in the store taking care of the customers.
She could handle just about any transaction, including counting and packaging
worms, night crawlers and minnows. The outboard motor sales and rentals were
pretty much left up to Jim and the motor repair work was Jim's alone. Norma
told me that during the years of World War II and gasoline rationing when Jim
got a taxi licence, she and her mother, using the family car, usually made the
taxi runs.
Olive had a good personality for meeting and dealing with people, a characteristic
obviously passed along to her daughter. Olive and Jim both had a talent for undertaking
a challenging task and working it to a successful completion, another talent
Norma inherited. In fact, no member of that family was shy in any way. They
were a close knit family and Olive was probably the nucleus of the family pride.
All three children played high school sports and Duane ("Skeeter")
continued on into semi-pro baseball. I doubt that Olive missed many games and
would be conspicuous in cheering on her team. Olive was very active and very
popular in the local bowling league, a sport popular with the local residents,
especially in the slow winter months.
Olive May (Ludwig) Rinckey died in Osteopathic Hospital, Traverse City, MI.
She remained a resident of Bellaire, MI. until her death. She, her husband and
son, Ronald "Stub" Rinckey are buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Bellaire,
Michigan.

She was married to James Aden
Rinckey on 16 Jul 1922 in Lansing, Ingham Co., MI. Both Jim and Olive Rinckey
were avid bowlers, as were many of the year-round residents of Antrim County
and other northerm Michigan areas. Bowling was an ideal indoor recreation during
the off-season winter months. I don't know all of the many trophys either of
them received, but we still have two handsome trophys that Jim received as a
member of the team that won the Michigan State Bowlers Assn. Five Men Championship,
Handicap Division in 1953 and 1957. Children were: Norma

Benjamin Lynch and his wife came to Hancock Co., KY, sometime between 1820 and
1830, where they lived on a farm located on the road between Hawesville and Cloverport,
sometimes known as the Davidson place. Both he and his wife are believed to
be buried in a cemetery in the community where they lived. Their dates of death
are not known. There is one source of information, not referenced herein, which
states that Benjamin died in Missouri.
As this is written no authoritative documentation has been found to verify place
of birth, death and burial. The death certificate of his son, Thomas Grubbs
Lynch, lists his father's name and birthplace as "B. F. Lynch" and
"Crawford Co., Mo." It lists his mother's maiden name as "Don't
Know" and her birthplace as "Crawford Co., Mo." In the block for
the name of the informant is the statement "The above is true to the best
of my knowledge." Below that is the signature of Mrs. W. H. Lynch with
her address of Patesville, Ky. Mrs. W. H. Lynch at that time was Elizabeth (Haren)
Lynch, the second wife of Benjamin Lynch's grandson, William Henry Lynch. She
may not have known the actual birthplace of Benjamin F. Lynch or his wife, but
simply knew that they came to Hancock Co., KY from Crawford Co., MO.

Russia a year later. An account of his service, death and burial is given in
the following article from the Breckenridge News, Cloverport, KY:
MANY ATTEND HERO'S FUNERAL
JAMES H. LYNCH HAS LAST HONORS PAID TO HIM BY RELATIVES AND FRIENDS
The funeral service of James H. Lynch who died in Russia was held at the grave
in Cloverport Cemetery, Thursday at 2 PM. Rev. F. M. Williams, pastor of the
Lucille Memorial Church here, assisted by Rev. J. R. Randolph conducted the service.
Rev. Williams read the burial Rites and paid a beautiful tribute to the soldier
who gave his life, and to the father and sister of the deceased.
The casket was draped with the American Flag and was accompanied to the grave
by a number of ex-soldiers from Cloverport and Patesville.
Lynch war a member of Co. 8 of the 339th Inf. He was called Feb. 26, 1918 from
Hancock County. The following May, he visited his father John A. Lynch at Patesville
for the last time and a few months later sailed for France.
Lynch was in Russia 8 months. According to information from the Red Cross headquarters,
his death occurred in a Red Cross Hospital at Arch Angel and was due to tuberculosis
developing from a severe cold. He died 5/14/1919 and was buried In Russia until
the government arranged for his body to be brought home.
Lynch was a young man of sterling qualities and reared under the influence of
a devoted father, having been bereft of a mother's love at the age of three years.
Rev. Williams in his tribute said of him that he first gave his heart to his
Maker and later gave his life for his country.
A hundred or more gathered at his casket to pay last respects to one of America's
flowers on Manhood who gave his life for his country.
Homer never married.

James' father-in-law, who was a prosperous farmer and lumberman in Hancock County,
deeded 69 acres of land to his daughter on May 25, 1885. This land was sold
in 1914 when the family left Kentucky for Oklahoma. They rented box cars and
moved all of their possessions, horses and farm machinery. Their son, Vernon,
and Hillery Gist rode in the cars to take care of, and quiet, the animals. Mary,
his wife, always longed to return to Kentucky but they never did, except for
one short visit. James died in Durant, OK, from injuries received when struck
