bullet Ruben Mason Karnes(8) (photo) was born on 12 Sep 1827 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. He died on 6 Dec 1906 in McLean Co., KY. He was buried in Webb-Karnes Family Cemetery, McLean Co., KY..

Ruben Mason Kearns was born in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky September 12, 1827. He died December 6, 1906 before reaching his eightieth birthday. His given name has been spelled both as Ruben and Reuben, however his name is spelled as "RUBEN" on his tombstone and, therefore, that spelling us used here.

The only formal education he had was a three months session at a private subscription school taught by an itinerant school teacher. There was no public school in the community at that time. Most of his education was received from his parents who were more literate than some of the early settlers . During his lifetime he became very well educated, subscribed for and read newspapers, kept books for his business, served on juries and took an active part in local politics. In religion he was a Methodist and enjoyed singing hymns which he sang very well with a strong voice. In his last years when he was blind (due to cataracts) he often sat in the shade of trees in the front yard and sang "How firm a foundation", or "When we've been there ten thousand years" and something about "India's coral strand."

He was a Democrat and in the Civil War (or the War Between the States) he sided with the C.S.A., though he never owned any slaves. He did work some free negroes on practically the same basis, supplying them liberally for all their needs but with little in the way of cash.

He married Tabitha Elizabeth Girvin and about the same time purchased from his mother-in-law, then a widow, one hundred acres of virgin bottom timber land for $200.00. Later his wife inherited an interest in the original Webb farm and they bought the interests of the other heirs so that altogether they owned something over 160 acres. This land then was in Muhlenberg County but became a part of McLean County when that new county was organized in 1854.

He was active in farming and coal mining, and raised and dealt in livestock in a very substantial way. Thousands of acres of unfenced woodland, most of it virgin forest, adjoined his land and was available for free pasturage. Livestock, other than work horses and milch cows were fed only in winter and the remainder of the year roamed at large over the Cypress Creek bottom timber land. The hill portion of the farm was underlaid with Number Nine coal. He first operated only a local wagon trade mine but later built a mile long tramroad connecting with the L & N railroad at Island and operated a wholesale coal mine.

He was about five feet eight inches in height and when a young man, had sandy brown hair. When I knew him his beard and remaining hair was snow white, his cheeks pink, eyes blue, and was rather plump, but not at all excessively overweight, sort of a typical Santa Claus in appearance.

His death resulted from a paralytic stroke. He was buried in the family cemetery on his old home place where later his widow was interred. The names and birth dates of his children are recorded in the sketch following concerning his wife. Parents: Nicholas Karnes and Margaret Mason.

He was married to Tabitha Elizabeth Girvin on 5 Nov 1850 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. Children were: Rosa Belle Karnes, Lillian May Karnes, Alva Karnes.

Ann (Anne) Rowe Kyler was born December 16, 1845 on a farm near Rome, Indiana. We understand that she met her future husband, Edward Oscar Gordon, at Tobinsport, Indiana. She lived with her parents in Perry County, Indiana until the time of her marriage, April 8, 1865. She was small, about five feet in height, slender in build, had large dark blue eyes and long brown hair, which she always wore on the top of her head. Quiet and unobtrusive in manner, neat in her dress and housekeeping, she raised and cared for her children well, inculcating in them habits of work and thrift. She died at the home of her son, Forrest Kyler Gordon, in Owensboro, KY and is buried with her husband in in the Gordon plot in Elmwood Cemetery in Owensboro. The names and birth dates of her four children are given in the biography of her husband. The spelling of her first name on her gravestone is "Anne," however most formal documents such as her Certificate of Marriage and U. S. census records give the name as "Anna." It has also been spelled as "Annie" on other documents. It appears that "Ann" was her true given name based on her name as entered in the Kyler family bible on the page of Births. The page of Marriages lists her name as Annie, probably her common nickname. The initial entries in that bible were apparently made by her parents, George Perry Kyler and Louisa Grundy (Anderson) Kyler and it is assumed to be their family bible since their birth dates and date of marriage are the first entries. Their names on both pages appear to by their own individual signatures and her handwriting is predominate on most, but not all, other entries.

More about her life and characteristics may be found in a descriptive letter by her granddaughter, Mrs. Edith Miles. At this writing, the letter is in the possession of Ernest P. Rowe, Jr. (5/24/1994)

Note: I have often been asked where Ann Rowe Kyler got her middle name and I don't know the answer. I do know, however, that her father had a sister named Ann who married a John S. Rowe and during that time became Ann Rowe. John S. Rowe's ancestry is unknown. -- E. P. Rowe, Jr. (4/4/1999) Parents: George Perry Kyler and Louisa Grundy Anderson.

bullet George Kyler(8) was born on 19 Sep 1783 in Cincinnati, OH.(8) He died on 11 Mar 1819 in Cincinnati, OH. A record of his death appeared in a newspaper called the Western Spy and Cincinnati General Advertiser, 13 March 1819 edition.

Most of the information about this George Kyler has been obtained from the book, A History of the Related Howell-Stonemets-Kyler Families by Billie L Stanton, referenced herein. The files of Ernest P. Rowe (1890-1981), also referenced, state that this George Kyler was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 19, 1783, whereas Ms. Stanton’s book states that he was a German immigrant whose name was originally Koehler, later Anglicized to Kyler, and that it is believed that he entered the country at Philadelphia in 1784. Neither reference cited documentary evidence. It is probable that Ernest Rowe obtained his information from Anne R. Kyler, who was still living when he married Pauline Gordon. Pauline’s grandmother, Anne R. Kyler, was a granddaughter of this George Kyler. Both sources agree on his date and place of death. If, as stated in the Stanton book, he immigrated in 1784 then he probably came with his parents as an infant. Otherwise there would have been much greater than 7 years difference in ages between George and his wife, Deborah, at the time of their marriage. An announcement of their marriage was published in the Cincinnati newspaper, Liberty Hall and Cincinati Mercury, 14 December 1807 edition. The wedding was performed by James Ewing, Esquire.

George’s occupation is unknown, but it is known that he was involved in several real estate transactions in Cincinnati between 1807 and 1817, including the following:
* Lot No. 288 on Elm and 4th Streets, bought one fourth (1/4) of lot in 1809, sold in 1813.
* Lot No. 243 on 5th and Beach Streets, bought in 1810, part sold in 1810, remainder in 1817.
* Lot No. 293 bought in 1913, sold part at a later date.
* Lot No. 268 on 5th and Beach Streets, bought in September 1817, part sold in 1928 and part sold in 1841 by heirs of George Kyler.

George died 11 March 1819; the record of his death appeared in a newspaper called the Western Spy and Cincinnati General Advertiser, the edition dated 13 March 1819. There is no record of where he is buried.

George died intestate, therefore there is no will to describe the disposition of his property. The first probate record appears in the minutes of the Court of Common Pleas for April 5, 1819; Deborah Kyler and her brother-in-law, Peter McNicoll, are appointed administrators with bond set at $1000. (Page 427) There is also a photostatic copy of a receipt that was used in the settlement of his estate. Mrs. Louise N. Smith of Baton Rouge, LA, now deceased, was in possession of that copy and loaned it to Ernest Rowe who made additional copies for his files. That receipt reads as follows:

"Cincinnati Feby 2d 1820 Recd of admr of the Estate of George Kyler five dollars in full for a subscription for a pump at the corner of Fifth and Race Streets adjoining said estate’s property. (signed) D. S. Halley"

The corner of Fifth and Race Streets in Cincinnati, Ohio, is in the present heart of downtown business district of that city. Ernest P. Rowe, Jr. currently has photo copies of the receipt.

He was married to Deborah Stonemets on 11 Dec 1807 in Cincinnati, OH.(1) Announcement appeared in the 14 Dec 1807 issue of Liberty Hall and Cincinnati Mercury, a Cincinnati, OH newspaper. Children were: Ann Kyler, Mary Ann Kyler, Elizabeth Kyler, Susan Kyler, George Perry Kyler, Deborah Kyler.
