bullet John Karnes(13) was born on 2 Oct 1794 in Liberty, Bedford, VA, USA. He died on 8 Dec 1882 in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN.

The following is a copy of his obituary from a Knoxville, TN newspaper dated 9 Dec 1882:

Death of an Old Citizen

John Karnes, Esq. died at his home three miles north of this city on the pike on the morning of Dec. 8, 1882.

Many, many friends and acquaintances will express sorrow at this announcement.

John Karnes was born at Liberty, Bedford County, Virginia October 2, 1794 and was 88 years, 2 months, and six days old when he departed this life.

Charles and Hannah Kames are his parents. John Kames familiar face has been seen at his late home place from a time "whereof the memory of man runneth not to the contrary." The aged men of this community that can controvert this statement, are, perhaps fewer in number than the half a dozen. He lived there before the pike was built or was thought of as a possibility. He lived there when we trudged the old dirt road and thought his home a long way from Knoxville.

He lived there when he had to ride to Cumberland Street, where it crosses Gay, before he could buy sugar and coffee and callico from a store. He lived there and survived such old men as Philip Smith, Andrew McCampbell, Andrew McPlillan, George W. (Chur ill?), Shettcrly, Crawford, George, and others, who were neighbors and friends, but long since gone.

He was a good man and a good citizen all the while he lived at the old Kames home. For many years he has been dim of sight, but could distinguish friends and acquaintances by their voice.

John Kames was one of those who have come down to us from a former generation with unsulled reputation, with integrity of character worthy of praise and emulation. But we shall see him no more. When passing by we shall miss him from his accustomed sea in the old porch, gazing out of his almost sightless eyes hoping to discern some familiar face.

He leaves a family of loved ones to regret his departure. Sons and daughters will gather around his remains and call him blessed. He leaves them the legacy of a good name; and they are transmitting it to their children without a blemish. Their recollections of him will be pleasant; and their fireside talks of the old man gone, will embellish his name in the memory of his children's children. He was a good soldier on furlough, when the master called, "Come up higher." We will not mourn his transition from earth to paradise.

bullet Lillian May Karnes(8) (photo) was born on 15 May 1857 in McLean Co., KY. She died on 29 Aug 1919 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY. She was buried in Macedonia Bapt. Church, Daviess Co., KY.

Lillian May Kearns, daughter of Reuben Mason Kearns and his wife, Tabitha Elizabeth (nee Girvin) was born at their farm home one and one-half miles west of' Island in McLean County, the same farm, and in the same house, where her mother and maternal grandmother were born. Her childhood and youth were spent there. Her formal education was limited to attendance at the country schools in the vicinity where she received what was then termed a "common school education." She read a great deal all through life and was well informed.

At age 18 about the time of her wedding she probably was 5 feet 3 inches in height, had light brown hair, blue eyes, medium complexion and weighed no more than 100 pounds. She married Richard Perry Rowe October 11, 1876 in the same home where she was born. The wedding was attended by all the close relatives of' the bride and groom as well as by more distant kinfolk and neighboring friends. The only information we now have about the clothing of the bride and groom is that the groom wore a new pair or custom made dress boots that hurt his feet. Following their marriage they first lived on "The Captain's Farm" in Ohio County. There her first two children were born prematurely and did not survive. For quite a few years thereafter she was not in good health. Upon recovering her health three sons were born to them, their names and birth dates being given elsewhere in this record.

An outstanding feature of her character was her loyal devotion to her husband whose judgment she considered almost infallible. No decision he made was ever questioned. If there ever was any disagreement between them it was behind closed doors. No one else ever heard of it.

Her parents were Methodists. After her marriage she joined the Baptist church where her husband was a member. At the time of' her death, which occurred suddenly August 29, 1919, she was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church and both she and her husband are buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church building. Parents: Ruben Mason Karnes and Tabitha Elizabeth Girvin.

She was married to Richard Perry Rowe on 9 Dec 1876 in McLean Co., KY. Children were: Ernest Perry Rowe, John Mason Rowe, Eric Judson Rowe.

bullet Nicholas Karnes(8) (5) was born in 1802 in Knoxville, Knox Co., TN. He died about 1869 in Muhlenberg Co., KY.

Nicholas Karnes was the "black sheep" of the Kerns/Karns family in Knoxville, TN. Gambling and drinking were his besetting habits. His family disowned him and he came to Kentucky, changing the spellings of his name to "Karnes." Apparently he was a man of pleasant disposition. His wives were from good families and his decendants have been honorable and successful people. Definitely, he was an alcoholic. Names and data on his children, his parents and grandparents are in the Karnes file. Reuben Mason Karnes was his third child. [Ref: "The Karnes Family - Michael Karnes of Bedford County, VA" by Mary Mayfield Traylor.] It has been noted that the referenced document refers to Hannah as a daughter of Michael Kern/Karns and also notes that Hannah married Charles Kern. Further, there is a couple of paragraphs about Hannah and Charles Karnes. (Needs clarification.)

This records lists 12 names as children of this Nicholas Karnes, three of which are identified as children of two of his wives. The mothers of the remaining 9 listed children have not yet been identified. In addition to the three wives listed herein, their are a couple of other names given, in some unverified records, as possible wives of Nicholas. It is quite conclusive that Reuben Mason Karnes was the only child of his marriage to Margaret Mason. - Ernest P. Rowe, Jr., 9/28/1996.
