Rebecca Ursula Igleheart was born at her parents' farm home in Ohio County, Kentucky December 11, 1836, the fourth of. twelve children. She was small and when grown weighed around ninety pounds and was not much more than five feet in height. Her hair was coal black, straight and very long. When combed out at full length she could bend back her head and her hair would touch the floor. She was very proud of it and only late in life did a few gray hairs appear and she had each of these hunted down and pulled out. She had dark brown eyes and a brunette complexion.

She was a vigorous housekeeper and an excellent cook. Salt-rising bread was one of her specialties. Also her husband wanted cornbread three times a day and he always got it, though for breakfast it was warmed over. She helped attend to the garden and not only made the home-made lye soap but made the lye for it by leeching out wood ashes in a hopper. The home they occupied for the greater portion of their married life was on a farm a little over a mile from Centertown. The house was a two-story log one with a central front hall. Across the rear of it was a one-story two room addition which was the kitchen and dining room. Though her kitchen was equipped with a wood burning cook stove, some of. the cooking was done at the huge fireplace in the room in front of: the kitchen. Logs were used for fuel and the fireplace had a crane. She also had an iron skillet with legs and an iron cover. Chicken cooked in this skillet over live coals pulled on to the hearth from the log fire was fit for a king.

An incident often related in after years by the participants is illustrative of the life of the times. Roads were few and poorly kept, usually muddy or dusty. Wagons and a few buggies were used but much travel was by horseback or even afoot. One Sunday the family went to church, she and her husband each on a horse, she of course on a side saddle, and all three sons riding one horse, Perry in front, Jim in the middle, and Jake on behind. Something happened to frighten the horses and temporarily they were unmanageable. Her horse stood nearly straight up on it's hind legs but she kept her seat. The boys' horse put his head between his front feet and pitched all three of them over his head up against a stump, Perry on the bottom, Jim next, and Jake on top of the pile. None of them were hurt, all remounted and got to church on time.

Another incident points up the longevity of her family. When her husband died in December, 1917 they had lived together 64 years since their wedding date. As a widow of a Civil War veteran she was entitled to a pension. It was necessary for her to have proof of her marriage, either by marriage certificate or by affidavits of three living persons who were present at the wedding. She had misplaced or lost the wedding certificate. The records of her marriage were at Hartford. This was the terrible winter of 1917-1918 and roads to the inland town of Hartford were impassable. By mail the County Clerk told us he could not find the records! (actually they were and are there but originally had not been indexed). So what did we do?

It really was not difficult to get the affidavits. They were executed by her older brother, John Collins Igleheart; her sister, Mrs. Lula Melvin Brown; and her younger brother, John Macoy Igleheart, all of whom were easily available. Her pension went through promptly.

Deeply religious, it was their custom so long as they had a home to themselves to have every member of the family kneel together in family prayer each evening before retiring. She was a Baptist. About 1916, when she was in her early seventies, she became a member of the Accia Chapter #46, Order of the Eastern Star. Her eligibility came through her deceased son, James Albert, who was a Mason. She died May 26, 1922 and is buried beside her husband in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, ESE of Owensboro in Daviess Co., KY. Her husband's Civil War Pension Record is No. 210745, Her widow's pension number is 859428.
