bullet Reece Howell(1) emigrated in Aug 1699 from South Wales, England.(1) He died in 1734 in Newton Township, Chester Co., PA.

The following text is copied from the book, "A History of Related Howell-Stonemets-Kyler Families," by Billie L. Stanton, referenced herein:

"The village of Kilycwm (Cil-y-cwm) is located in the County of Carmarthen, South Wales. It consists of two hamlets intersected by the River Towy, containing in present times 450 inhabitants divided almost equally between the two sections of the village. It was from this village that Reece Howell departed in August 1699 to make his home in America. No doubt his decision to emigrate was driven by the disfavor with which members of the Quaker faith (to which he belonged) were looked upon in Wales as well as the rest of England. Reece's arrival in America is documented with a letter from the Quaker monthly meeting held at Bryn-maine and Gwern-duthack in Wales the·24th of the 5th (new calendar 8th) month of the year 1699.

" 'To whom it may concern this is to certifie you that Rees Howell of ye Parish Killicomb (sic) has thesse seuarall years frequented our meeting & hath tender deseires in him as appears unto us & we doe in loue part with him, & as wittnesses thereof wee doe Subscribe our names att Gwern-duthach'.

"This letter of transfer was directed to the Radnor Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania. (Friends Historical Library, Strathmore College)

"Reece is next mentioned in the Radnor meeting records in 1701 when he is 'lent 5 pounds to buy a cow' and in 1712 the monthly meeting at Haverford 'agrees that Merion friends shall have the money lent to Rees Howell and Joseph Evans towards finishing their meeting house'. (Friends Historical Library, Strathmore College)

"It is assumed that Reece was accompanied to America by his wife, formerly Elizabeth Davis of Sadbury, Gloucestershire, as the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting records report 'Eleanor Davis received on certificate from Sadbury Monthly Meeting Glossester (sic) County England dated 1711.12.4.' and states that she is sister to Elizabeth Howell wife of Reece Howell. The absence of a marriage record in Pennsylvania for Reece and Elizabeth further supports this assumption.

"Reece lived in Newtown Township, Chester County (now Delaware County), Pennsylvania until his death in 1734. His will was dated the 31st day of the 5th month (actually 8th month) 1734, was signed with his mark and witnessed by Lewis Lewis, Evan Lewis and Wm. Lewis. The will was proved (certified in court) 26 Nov 1734, in Chester County Pennsylvania. The will mentions his daughter Ann (fifty shillings); his son Howell (ten pounds), daughter Mary (ten pounds), son Reece (ten pounds and his bed and furniture), wife Elizabeth (half of real and personal estate during her natural life) and son David (the other half of real and personal estate with wife Elizabeth's share going to David on her death). An inventory of Reece's estate lists among other items: Wearing apparel, horse saddle and bridle, two old horses, five cows, five young cattle, eighteen sheep, swine, heat and rye in the barn and in the ground, bedding and bed cloaths (sic), 3 sheets 2 pillow cases and table cloath, 5 old bags, walnut table, bench and 4 chairs, grid iron and toaster, smoothing iron, brass pan, pewters, small chest, kneading trough, spinning wheel and cards, and many other items amounting in all to 95 pounds, English sterling.
