Pauline Gordon was born at the home of her parents in Patesville, Hancock County, Kentucky May 27, 1901. The family moved to Owensboro in 1902. She graduated from grade schools in Owensboro and attended Owensboro High School. At 15 years of age, she was the oldest of 6 children when her mother died in August 1916. It was then necessary for her to quit high school and assume the household duties of her mother. After her father married Elizabeth Avo Riddle in July of 1921, she attended the National College of Business and Finance and graduated in June, 1922 Immediately after graduation she was employed by Ken-Rad Tube and Lamp Co. of Owensboro advancing to become secretary to the president of the company, a position she held until her marriage October 29, 1925.

After her marriage to Ernest Rowe they resided at Griffith Avenue in Owensboro until he entered the government service in 1927 at which time she moved with her husband and children to Louisville, KY, later living in Fort Thomas, KY, Cleveland OH and Lexington, KY, as he was transferred about under Civil Service.

Ernest Rowe had for several years suffered with a drinking problem which, after several stays at a sanitarium and other efforts failed, finally caused him to lose his Government employment and brought on financial problems. In the summer of 1938 she took her son and went to Owensboro to stay at her parent's home until she could find employment.

On April 10, 1939, with the war raging in Europe and this country preparing for defense, she started employment in the Purchasing Office at Ft. Knox, KY and made her residence at Elizabethtown, KY where she brought her son after school was out that spring. On July 1, 1942, after the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor and this nation declared war against Japan, Germany and Italy, she was reassigned as Purchasing Agent at Camp Campbell, KY, a new installation still under construction, and she and her son, Perry, resided in nearby Clarksville, TN. After the war Camp Campbell was made a permanent installation and redesignated as Fort Campbell. After Perry graduated from high school and entered the Army in June 1945, she lived alone maintaining regular correspondence with him until he returned home in November 1946. When he left for school a few months later, in 1947, she was again alone except for his brief visits home until Ernest had overcome his problems and moved to Clarksville to be with her sometime shortly before Perry married in March, 1949. She and her husband had never divorced.

"Polly," as she was called by her husband and friends, continued her employment at Ft. Campbell until November 1956, when she resigned that position and, with her husband, moved to Bellaire, MI, to be near her son and his family, and later continued her Federal employment in Bellaire as County Office Clerk for the Farmers Home Administration of the U. S. Dept. Agriculture. By that time she had become affectionately known as "Grandma Polly" by her grandchildren. She retired in October 1968 when she and Ernest returned to Clarksville, TN.

While in Clarksville, she became very active in the local Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving one or more terms as Regent and in other Chapter offices. She was also a member of Clarksville Chapter No. 202, Order of the Eastern Star, Tennessee. With Ernest's advancing years he was requiring more and more personal attention until it reached a point that she could no longer provide for his needs. In the summer of 1979 it was decided to move him to Slidell, LA where he could be cared for by his son, Perry, and family. In early 1980, she made the decision to move to Slidell but, while preparing for the move from Clarksville, she suffered a mild stroke from which she recovered in a short period. The doctors, however, would not approve her release from the hospital until her son arrived to accept her release.

She moved into an apartment in Slidell only a few blocks from her son's home and the nursing home to which Ernest had previously been admitted. Shortly thereafter, her granddaughter, Becky, and family rented the apartment next to "Grandma Polly" and were able to provide company and needed assistance. During the next few years she seemed to enjoy family company and activities, including the wedding of her granddaughter, Patricia, and was able to view the Slidell Mardi Gras parades with family members from the front of her apartment complex, which was on the parade route.

In early 1983, she was experiencing increasing physical problems which required much personal attention. Throughout her years from 1938, she had been an independent and self-sustaining person and she was concerned that she was becoming a burden on other family members. With that feeling praying on her mind, she called her son one evening in May and requested that she be admitted to a nearby nursing home. She was admitted to Greenbriar Nursing Home in Slidell on May 19, 1983 where she remained a resident until her death on January 23, 1985 at the age of 83 years, 7 months, and 27 days. She is buried in the Rowe plot of Elmwood Cemetery, Owensboro, Kentucky.

Her NSDAR No. is 475131 by lineage to Alexander Gilmore. Her Social Security number is 405-16-2755. A biography written in 1958 by her husband also provides the following information:

"At the age of twelve she became a member of Settle Memorial Methodist Church at Owensboro, Kentucky and at eighteen joined the Order of the Eastern Star, Accacia Chapter No. 46; the White Shrine at Owensboro and the Rebecca Lodge.

"She had dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fair skin and weighed about 105 pounds at the age of twenty. After an attack of typhoid fever at the age of twenty-one her hair has been white and, at this writing, she weighs 135 pounds. Her height is five feet, four and one-half inches."

Throughout her life she did not use her given first name, Veva. Her Social Security card and all other legal documents gave her name as Pauline G. (or Gordon) Rowe. She preferred to be called "Polly" or Pauline. Her gravestone is inscribed, "Pauline Gordon Rowe."
