There is another story that he was last heard of in Buffalo, NY. The family thought he was going to Alaska to hunt gold. They last heard from him in a postcard he sent showing him with his back to the camera, with the message, "As you can see, I am still going away from you." Edward Oscar Gordon⁽⁸⁾⁽⁴⁴⁾ (photo) was born on 19 May 1842 in Baltimore, MD. He died on 16 Sep 1927 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY. He was buried on 17 Sep 1927 in Elmwood Cemetery, Owensboro, KY.

Edward Oscar Gordon was born in Baltimore, Maryland May 19, 1842. Some months later the family moved to Rome, Perry Co., Indiana where he spent his youth. Sometimes he worked in his father's cigar factory where he became skilled in cigar making. When sixteen years old he ran away from home and obtained employment cooking in the galley of a river boat. Thereafter he continued employment on Ohio and Mississippi river steam boats for several years.

He was small in stature, probably five feet six inches in height, had no excess weight, stood and walked very erectly, had keen blue eyes and brown hair. His principal recreation was dancing and he boasted that he could dance all night in a size 4½ shoe. He had noticeably small feet.

During the Civil War he was a Confederate soldier attached to the Nashville Headquarters of Nathan Bedford Forrest's Ranger Corps where he had no combat duty. About the end of the war, on April 8, 1865, he married Anne Rowe Kyler. To them were born four children, namely: (1) Helen Louise, b. January 28, 1866; (2) Edward Franklin, b. October 28, 1870; (3) Forrest Kyler, b. June 18, 1874; and (4) Agnes, b. October 19, 1877.

In the spring of 1877 he and his family moved from Nashville, TN to a farm near Bethlehem Church in Hancock County, KY where they resided until 1890. There he farmed, sometimes was a deputy sheriff, and intermittently ran a country grocery store. In 1890 he moved to Hawesville, the county seat, where he lived the remainder of his active life. During these years he served as County Sheriff, Circuit Court Clerk and County Court Clerk.

Democratic Party politics and religion were his greatest interests. He could deliver a political speech or a sermon on short notice. He was reared a Catholic but left this faith to join the Baptist Church when he married a Baptist. He was considered a good lay preacher, occasionally filling the pulpit in the absence of the regular ordained ministers.

About 1919 he and his wife, beginning to be feeble, moved from Hawesville to the home of his son, Forrest Kyler Gordon, in Owensboro and both spent their last years at his home. His death occurred September 16, 1927 and he is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Owensboro, KY.

Forrest Kyler Gordon⁽⁸⁾ (photo) was born on 18 Jun 1874 in Nashville, TN, USA. He died on 17 Sep 1954 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Owensboro, KY.

Forrest Kyler Gordon was born at Nashville, Tennessee, June 18, 1874. In the Spring of 1877 his parents moved to Kentucky, travelling by river boat from Nashville to Cloverport, Kentucky, thence by spring wagon to a farm near the Bethlehem Church in Hancock County. In 1890 the family moved to Patesville. All the formal education he received was from the public schools of: that community. However, it was there at Patesville where he commenced the study of pharmacy in the drugstore of' Haynes and Scott. He became a Registered Pharmacist June 23, 1898. Thereafter he was employed in Patterson's drugstore in Hawesville and in W. S. Hazel's drugstore at Knottsville until he moved to Owensboro, Kentucky in 1902. At this period he was about five feet eleven inches in height, weighed approximately 120 pounds, had blue eyes, fair complexion and sandy brown hair with a reddish tinge.

From this time on, nearly all his life was spent in Owensboro in the drug business, first working for Mullen & Haynes and others, then in 1907 he purchased the drugstore and fixtures of' a. store located at Seventh & Triplett streets and went into business for himself. Other drugstores he owned and operated at one time or another were located at (1)1000 East Fourth Street; (2) I.O.O.F. Building, Third Street; (3) Owensboro Hotel Building, Frederica Street; (4) 320 Frederica Street and (5) on the corner of Twentieth & Triplett Streets.

He was married to Minnie Belle Lynch on May 3, 1899. To them was born the following children: (1) Veva Pauline, b. May 27, 1901, d. January 28, 1985; (2) Forrest Edwina, b. December 22, 1904, d. March 25, 1925; (3) Edith Elizabeth, b. November 23, 1906; (4) a daughter born August 6, 1908, died same day; (5) Gilmore Kyler, b. May 10, 1910, d. July 16, 1930; (6) Wayne Powell, b. August 3, 1912; (7) Dorothy, b. March 22, 1915; and (8) Thomas Edward, b. August 1, 1916, d. April, 1917.

His wife, Minnie Belle, died August 30, 1916. Five years later, on July 5, 1921, he married Elizabeth Riddle. They had five children whose names are: (1) Forrest Kyler, b. December 7, 1922, d. September 3, 1943; (2) Thomas Riddle, b. January 24, 1924. d. July 19, 1961; (3) Ernest Barr, b. September 28, 1926; (4) Kathryn Elizabeth, b. April 20, 1930; and (5) George Miller, b. October 10, 1931.

Mr. Gordon was a Methodist and long a member of' the Third Street Methodist Church in Owensboro. He was a Mason. In politics a Republican and was Campaign Chairman for the Republican ticket in Daviess County for the 1917 election at which time the only Republican candidates ever elected in that county for the office of. County Judge and County Sheriff were successful.

Some years before the time of his death he began to be bothered with cataracts on each eye and had one cataract removed in a successful operation. However his eyesight was badly impaired during his last years. He died September 17, 1954 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery at Owensboro. Parents: Edward Oscar Gordon and Ann Rowe Kyler.

He was married to Minnie Belle Lynch on 3 May 1899 in Hancock Co., KY. Children were: Veva Pauline Gordon, Forrest Edwina Gordon, Edith Elizabeth Gordon , Infant Gordon, Gilmore Kyler Gordon, Wayne Powell Gordon, Dorothy Gordon, Thomas Edward Gordon.

Helen Josephine Gordon was born on 14 Dec 1848 in Baltimore, MD. She died in Derby, Perry Co., IN. Helen apparently died at an early age, since she is not listed with the family in the cesnus of 1860. Parents: John J. Gordon and Eliza A. McCue.

Helen Louise Gordon⁽⁶⁾ was born on 28 Jan 1866 in Grandview, Spencer Co., IN.⁽⁶⁾ She died on 13 Oct 1949 in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR.⁽⁶⁾ She was buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Little Rock, AR.⁽⁶⁾ Parents: Edward Oscar Gordon and Ann Rowe Kyler.

She was married to Ivory M, Stevens on 20 Nov 1886 in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Hancock Co., KY.⁽⁶⁾ Children were: Oscar Allen Stevens , Guy Stevens.

Infant Gordon was born on 6 Aug 1908 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY. She died on 6 Aug 1908 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY. She was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Owensboro, KY. This daughter died at childbirth. Parents: Forrest Kyler Gordon and Minnie Belle Lynch.

Jesse Kenneth Gordon⁽⁷⁾ was born on 7 Apr 1904 in Fayetteville, Fayette, Co., WV. He died on 24 Jun 1984 in Eldorado, Saline Co., IL. He had Social Security Number 305-03-2444. He was buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery, Eldorado, Saline Co., IL. After his separation from Hazel, he left Tell City and took Clyda Smith Shaddwick with him to Eldorado, Saline Co. Illinois where they lived together until his death. There never was a divorce from Hazel. Parents: Edward Franklin Gordon and Anna Mae Jones.

He was married to Hazel Dorsey Snyder on 24 Dec 1927 in Tell City, Perry Co., IN. He was separated in Sep 1934 in Tell City, Perry Co., IN. Children were: Bettye Margaret Gordon, Mary Maxine Gordon, Gerald Kenneth Gordon, James Lowell Gordon.

John A. Gordon⁽⁴⁶⁾ was born on 19 May 1845 in Baltimore, MD.⁽²⁴⁾⁽⁴⁵⁾ He died on 5 May 1862 in Rome, Perry Co., IN. He was buried in Terrance Conner Cemetery, Perry Co., IN. Buried beside his mother. Parents: John J. Gordon and Eliza A. McCue.

John Allen Gordon (Private). Parents: Edward Franklin Gordon and Anna Mae Jones.

He was married to Charlotte Evelyn Cox on 5 Apr 1938. Children were: Lendall Kyler Gordon, Meredith Ellen Gordon, Patrick Allen Gordon.

John J. Gordon⁽⁸⁾⁽¹³⁾⁽⁴⁷⁾ was born about 1810 in Baltimore, MD. He was buried in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Hancock Co., KY.

There are conflicting bits of information on John J. Gordon, especially on his place of birth, occupation and his place of residence in Indiana.

One source, apparently based on family tradition of one branch of his descendants, gives his place of birth as Glasgow, Scotland and notes that he arrived in Baltimore, MD in early April of 1842 and that he and his wife, Eliza A. (nee McCue), sojourned there until after their son, Edward Oscar, was born on May 19, 1842. It does not say how long they "sojourned" in Baltimore, but that they then traveled through Pennsylvania and Ohio before settling in Grandview, (Spencer Co.), Indiana. It also says that he was a practicing physician and that he had a cigar factory. In conclusion, it says that after his wife died he moved to the home of his daughter, Jennie Powers, in Hancock Co., Ky where he continued to practice medecine until he died. He was buried in the Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetary near the Powers home in Hancock Co., but there is no marker at the grave.

Presently, I have no documentation to support that: (1) he emmigrated from Scotland, (2) he was a practicing physician, or (3) that he ever lived in Grandview, IN. He did, however, apparently live in, or near, Rome in Perry Co., IN, which is in an adjacent county to Spencer Co.

The 1850 census of Tobin Township, Perry Co,, IN, lists his age as 40, his occupation as cigar maker, and his birthplace as Maryland. It also lists the ages of his wife and four children and the birthplace of his wife and first three children as Maryland with the fourth child born in Indiana. The 1860 census at the same location lists his age as 51, his occupation as tobacconist, and birthplace as Maryland. That census lists the same birthplace for his children but lists his wife's birthplace as Virginia.

In the 1880 and 1900 census of Hancock Co., KY, where his son, Edward O. Gordon, was then living, the forms had two additional columns to enter the birthplace of a person's father and mother. On those forms the birthplace of Edward's father was listed as Maryland and his mother was listed as born in Virginia.

Based on the listed birthplace and birthdates of his first three children, John J. Gordon and his family apparently left Maryland and settled in Perry Co., IN, sometime between December 1848 and the date of the 1850 census, probably in 1849.

He was a Justice of the Peace with an office in the old Perry County, IN, courthouse. The book entitled "The History of the Related Howell, Stonemets and Kyler Families", by Billie L. Stanton, cites documents that were signed by John J. Gordon, J. P., in 1863 and 1865.

He was a Postmaster at Rome, IN. A list of Post Offices and Postmasters lists John J. Gordon as Postmaster at Rome from 8/24/1853 to 12/11/1857, and possibly again from 10/19/1859 to 3/2/1866. The second entry appears to be John I. Gordon, with the middle initial of "I" instead of "J," that could be a misprint or a poor reproduction of the list, however I doubt that he could have served as Postmaster and Justice of the Peace (in 1863-65) at the same time.

Judging by John J. Gordon’s age given in the 1850 and 1860 census, he must have been born in 1809 or 1810.

He was married to Eliza A. McCue about 1835. Children were: George T. Gordon , Edward Oscar Gordon, John A. Gordon, Helen Josephine Gordon, Benjamin Franklin Gordon, Eliza Jane "Jennie" Gordon.
