Rebecca Melissa Gilmore was born in Crawford County, Indiana November 5, 1837 at the home of her parents, John Smith Gilmore and Sarah Catherine (Casner) Gilmore. She married Thomas Grubbs Lynch March 14, 1854 when she was sixteen years of age. They had eight children, namely: John A., James W., Sarah Catherine, Susan A., Elvira Lucretia, William H., Margaret M., Benjamin E. who died in infancy, and Minnie Belle.

They lived on a farm near Patesville, in Hancock County, Kentucky. When her husband joined the Union Army during the Civil War she had young children and was left on the farm with little, if any, help. Her Gilmore relatives in Louisville, feeling she should have help, sent her a woman slave to help with the housework and the children. However Mrs. Lynch was so opposed to slavery she would not consent to have a slave in her service and the negro was returned promptly to her owners.

Her kind disposition tempered the somewhat despotic tendencies of her husband and it was largely by her influence and teaching that the good character and habits of their children were developed. She died November 2, 1908 and is buried with her husband in the Wheatly Cemetery near Patesville.

He married Elizabeth Webb at her farm home in what was then Muhlenberg Co., about one and a half miles west of Island Station. Tabitha Elizabeth Girvin was born April 27, 1829, in the same house where her mother was born on a farm then located in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. That portion of the county was included in McLean County when that new county later was established in 1854. The small log schoolhouse she attended as a child was located in the wooded hills about a half' mile east of her home. Nothing remained of' this school building when this writer was a child excepting a small cleared spot in the woods, grown up in bushes, and a mound of: clay where the stick and mud chimney had been. Probably it had burned. It had been, a "subscription school," the teacher being paid by those who subscribed certain monthly payments.

She married Reuben Mason Karnes at her home wherein likewise her mother and father had been married. She was then eighteen and her husband twenty-one years of' age. They had several children but only three survived infancy. They were: (1) Rosa Belle, born July 2, 1855, died February 28, 1882; (2) Lillian May, born May 15, 1857, died August 29, 1919: (3) Alva, born 1862, died December, 1922.

She was a vigorous manager of the household. Usually she had one or more Negro house and garden servants. The one who stayed with her the longest was Miranda. We children called her "Aunt Mirandy." Miranda gave birth to three children while she lived there. These always resulted after she took a two week vacation in Owensboro. Two of these Negro children were raised on the farm and trained as servants.

Grandma supervised every detail of the planting and cultivation of a large vegetable garden. This garden was located about 200 yards down the land from the dwelling and on one side of it was a huge male mulberry tree. Under this shade tree was a never failing well of good water. After my father and mother bought the home place and we all lived there, my mother, Lillian May, managed the house but Grandma Karnes reserved for herself the management of the garden. Every morning after breakfast, in spring and summer, she would have the Negro boy, Clarence (nicknamed "Samson"), bring the wheelbarrow, garden tools, baskets and buckets, and they would set out down the lane to the garden. Establishing herself in a stout chair in the shade, she directed Samson in the gathering of the vegetables for the day's cooking while she shelled peas, strung beans, and otherwise looked after the produce.

Most of her ancestors had lived to mature ages and had passed down to her the family history and many stories of incidents in their lives, and interesting accounts about the early settlement of the colonies. I spent many interesting sessions listening to her repeat these tales. In fact, most of my knowledge of the early history of Kentucky came from her as, at that time, we did not study Kentucky history in school. One of the tales she related was about her grandmother (Elizabeth Irvin who married John Girvin) having stood by the side of the road in Virginia when she was quite young and watching the militia, commanded by Col. George Washington, march by enroute to join the English soldiers under General Braddock before the advance on Fort Duquesne. She also told stories about Indian attacks on the early settlements as handed down by participants.

One of her activities was that of a volunteer midwife. In the absence of a doctor, and sometimes with a doctor, she assisted in numerous births in the community. Doctors were not always immediately available and most every community then had women experienced about assisting in births. Naturally such services were not paid for, nor was pay expected.

She died in our home in Island July 23, 1910 and is buried in the family cemetery beside her husband near the homesite where she was born.
