Wheatley at the home of Robert Montgomery. Thomas Ogden, her step-father, gave the consent.

After their marriage, George and Harriet moved to the "river bottoms" along the Ohio river, between Hawesville and Cloverport, where the Wheatley brothers; Thomas, George and Elijah, were homesteading. After settling legal requirements for title, they moved back to the hills of Hancock Co. because of malaria. They lost this homestead land to squatters during their absence in the Civil War.

When the war broke out, Thomas and Elijah volunteered their services to the Union Army and George and Harriet moved to the Rough River area to take care of his parents. They might have had it easier had he gone to war also. The old folks became sick and died, they lost two children of their own, and George got malaria and was "ailing" ever after until his death in 1900. In 1868, they returned to Hancock Co. where they lived the remainder of their lives. After George's death, Harriet and her daughter lived together until Martha died in 1907.
