bullet Sarah Catherine Casner(8) (3) (photo) was born on 12 Jul 1807 in PA, USA. She died on 1 Apr 1867 in Hancock Co., KY. She was buried in Wheatley Cemetery near Dukes, Hancock Co., KY.

There is conflicting information as to Sarah Catherine’s birthplace, Pennsylvania or Tennessee. The following information is taken from my father’s book, Genealogy of Ernest Perry Rowe, Jr., and was provided to him by Miss Lillie Peckinpaugh, a great-granddaughter of Sarah Catherine and John Smith Gilmore:

"Soon after Sarah Catherine Casner was born her father and his family moved to Kentucky or Tennessee. They may have lived in both states. Indiana was admitted to statehood in 1816 and it was just shortly before Indiana became a state that Solomon (Sarah's father) and his family moved to Harrison County, Indiana. Sarah lived with her parents until the time of her marriage to John Smith Gilmore, after which they lived on a farm in southern Indiana."

The second source of information is the book by Walter and Florence Beanblossom, referenced herein. Florence Beanblossom is also a great-granddaughter of Sarah Catherine and John Smith Gilmore. That source provides, in part, the following information:

"Sarah Catherine Casner, which after much effort was proven to be her full name, was born 7/12/1807 in Tennessee, the daughter of Solomon and Polly Hammond Casner, a Pennsylvania girl of German descent."

After John’s death, Sarah Catherine ran a stagecoach inn in Leavenworth, IN. This stage line was established in 1835 by Seth Leavenworth, founder of the town, in partnership with John Orchard and Jonathan Williams. It ran from Leavenworth via Fredonia, Milltown, Proctorville, Paoli, Orleans, Bedford, Springville, Bloomington, Martinsville, and Port Royal to Indianapolis.

While in Leavenworth, Sarah was close enough to her mother-in-law, Rebecca Smith Gilmore, that she frequently ministered to her. Rebecca was bedridden by this time and could not appear in court in 1848 to answer questions concerning her widow’s pension, and this added to Sarah’s hardships after being widowed. Sarah and her twelve living children are listed in the 1850 census of Harrison, Co., IN.

On November 29, 1851, she married Thomas Ogden in Cannelton, IN, and subsequently moved to the Ogden farm near Dukes in Hancock Co., KY. Sarah and Thomas Ogden and four of her children are listed in the 1860 census of Hancock Co., KY. Sarah died April 4, 1867, and was buried on a hill on the Ogden farm, now known as the Wheatley Cemetery.

Pictures of four of her children (Katie, James Gideon, Henry Braxton and George Washington) were given to my mother, Pauline (Gordon) Rowe., by Miss Lillie Peckinpaugh of Rockport, Indiana, and are now in my possession. Some of them are daguerreotypes.

The following article describing the house where Thomas and Sarah Ogden lived is taken from the Breckenridge News, Cloverport, Ky., probably between 1945 and 1955.

Home of Wheatleys for 150 Years

"Pecple who enjoy thinking of the houses of "our Grandfathers" will appreciate an old house of logs which stands in the Dukes Community. There reside Mr. and Mrs. Murray Pryer. Mrs. Pryer before her marriage was Miss Jesse Wheatley, who had been a teacher for 27 years and two years ago re-entered the field because emergency teachers were stepping into the gap to prevent the "shut-down" of a number of rural schools. Mrs. Pryer taught the McGavock school for the last two years.

She with her family resides in the old house. This house for generations has been occupied by Wheatley families. Mrs. Pryer was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Deterding Wheatley, the grand-daughter of George and Harriet Gilmore Wheatley and a great grand-daughter of Mrs. Sarah Gllmore Ogden who lived in this house before the Civil War. The family history handed down from one generation to another reminds them that the place was settled by Otho Williams. This territory, now Hancock County, was then a part of Breckenrtdge County.

The house is in excellent state of repair, and the six rooms each are very large. Built in slave days, the fireplaces, one at either end, would take a seven foot log. In later years, these have been rebuilt.

In the process of rebuilding, the fire-places are much smaller, but the outside chimneys have not bean changed from the native rocks of which they are constructed and still are of sufficient site for Santa and his pack. For many years, slave cabins stood in the yard near the old house."

The old house burned about 1955 but one of the old chimneys still stands, vine covered and a sight to behold. As one stands and gazes at this reminder of the past, he can not help but wonder what joys and heart-aches occurred therein.

bullet Solomon Casner/Kesner(8) (3) was born in Hanover, Germany.

There are two stories relative to the background and life of Solomon Casner (Kesner). Both are given in the book compiled by Walter and Florence Beanblossom, referenced herein. The first story, which the Beanblossoms refer to as the Gilmore tradition, is best related by Miss Lillie Peckinpaugh of Rockport, Indiana, in a statement she prepared and gave to my father, Ernest P. Rowe, in 1956. Florence Beanblossom and Lillie Peckinpaugh are both 2nd great-granddaughters of Solomon Casner. Miss Peckinpaugh's statement is typed below exactly as she gave it to my father. - Ernest P. Rowe, Jr., August 21, 1997.

"Solomon Casner (Kesner) born in Hanover, Germany was a soldier in the Hessian Army. He may have deserted to the Colonial cause, at any rate he chose to remain in America and lived in Pennsylvania. He married a Pennsylvania girl, Polly (Mary Ellen) Hammond (or Hummond) at Woodstock, Virginia, supposed to be a run-a-way marriage. Perhaps her family objected to the former Hessian soldier. But they returned to Pennsylvania to live where all of their children were born. There is no record of the marriage date as the courthouse was burned by the Union Army during the Civil War.

"Solomon was captured by the Indians but after two or three years managed to escape and made his way back to his family. It is thought, as related by older members of the descendants, that some time between 1807 and 1810 they made their way down to Tennessee, or into Kentucky, where they lived until shortly before 1816, the year Indiana was made a state. Before that date the family came to Harrison County, Indiana.

"To Solomon and Polly Casner were born:

1. Polly Casner, who married Frederic Souder
2. Margaret (Peggy) who married Samuel Reynolds (or Bundy)
3. John, who married Susan Koffman
4. Jake (Jacob) who married Mary Devine
5. Susan, who married Leonard Koffman
6. Chris., who married Margaret Briles
7. Barbara, who married Henry Stine
8. Katie (Catherine), who married John Gilmore
Katie, born in Pennsylvania July 12, 1807, died in Hancock County, Kentucky, April 1, 1867.

"It was also said they had a son, Solomon; but where he came in the above list I have no idea, neither did my folks. There is a record of marriage in the Harrison County Court house in 1824, and one in Salem, Indiana in 1825. My great Uncle, Alexandar Gilmore, said his parents were married in Salem. It was hardly possible there were two of the same name. Some day I hope to unravel the mystery.

"Solomon Casner had been a man of. means, perhaps wealth. In 1810 he decided to return to Germany to get what belonged to him. He never reached there, he never came back and one or two things may have happened, either he was killed by Indians. or he died enroute. While his children and wife were living, a man came from Hanover, Germany, to try to locate the heirs and offered a great sum of money for their claim to the estate. He said (it must have been in bonds) that he had seen the vault in the Bank of Hanover and had his hand on the box having the Casner name. Well they thought if it was worth the great amount he offered, it was worth more and they would try to get it all. But evidently no one knew how to go about it and after fifty years being unclaimed reverted to the Government. So much for the tale of a lost fortune."

The second version, which the Beanblossoms refer to as the Casner (Kesner) tradition, says that Solomon came to America about 1770, settled in Virginia, enlisted in the Continental Line of Virginia soon after the outbreak of the War, and was with Gen. Washington at Valley Forge and throughout the War. He later moved to Tennessee, returned to Virginia and sold his land, and disappeared on his return trip, about 1810.

The Beanblossoms state that a diligent search failed to produce any conclusive evidence to substantiate either of the two stories. However, it was their belief that he was not a Hessian soldier and state that the facts discovered to date tend to support the Kesner tradition. Noted as chief among the facts are:

1. Solomon paid a tax in Bucks Co., PA, in 1783, probably too early for him to have acquired property if a Hessian soldier.
2. He acquired 139 acres of land from the State of Virginia in 1792, probably for services rendered. This land was near Woodstock.
3. He is known to have been in Tennessee where his widow married Peter Vandeventer in 1811 after Solomon's death.

The deed to the above mentioned land reads as follows:

Henry Lee, Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia; To all whom these presents may come Greetings; Know ye, that by virtue of an Entry under the Act of Assembly entitled, "An Act Concerning Surveyors" and in Consideration of the Ancient Composition of fifteen Shillings Sterling paid by Solomon Kesner into the Treasury of the Commonwealth, there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto said Solomon Kesner a certain Tract or parcel of Land containing 139 acres ---- Lying and being in the County of Shenandoah on one of the branches of Messennetten Creek ----.

Dated at Richmond on the first day of August in the year of our Lord 1792 and of the Commonwealth the 17th.
